At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world’s maritime operations moving. From tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to offshore service vessels in the North Sea, our customers rely on Helm CONNECT to run their businesses and we don’t take that responsibility lightly.
World-class software doesn’t happen by chance. It takes people who care deeply about quality, take ownership, collaborate effectively, and continually look for better ways to work. That’s The Helm Way, and that’s where you come in.
Your Mission
We’re looking for a Business Analyst to join our Product team.
You will be the connective tissue between business needs and product execution, translating stakeholder requirements into clear, actionable specifications that enable our Development, Design, and Quality Assurance teams to deliver valuable product outcomes.
Working closely with Product Managers, you will bring structure, clarity, and momentum to product delivery, freeing Product Managers to focus on strategy, discovery and product direction.
AI will be an important part of how you work. You will use Claude and other AI tools to accelerate high-volume activities such as drafting requirements, synthesizing feedback, identifying gaps, generating test scenarios, and preparing release documentation. You will direct the tools, critically evaluate their outputs, and remain fully accountable for everything shared with Development teams and stakeholders.
Make your impact with a rapidly growing marine software business.
You Will
· Elicit, document, analyze, and validate business requirements through stakeholder interviews, working sessions, research, and product discovery activities.
· Use Claude and other AI tools to accelerate first-draft documentation while independently reviewing, refining, and validating all outputs.
· Translate business and customer needs into clear functional specifications, user stories, process flows, and measurable acceptance criteria.
· Maintain a groomed backlog with PM partnership; use Claude for gap detection before tickets reach development.
· Document current-state and future-state workflows, business rules, system behaviour, and product interactions to create alignment before development begins.
· Act as trusted point of contact for scope, timelines, and delivery status; facilitate working sessions across business, product, and development.
· Communicate changes, decisions, and rationale clearly — no one should be surprised.
· Develop test scenarios for QA/UAT using Claude-generated drafts from acceptance criteria; track delivery against those criteria and escalate gaps.
· Analyze product usage, support tickets, and stakeholder feedback to inform prioritization; build lightweight reporting for stakeholders and leadership.
· Coordinate release notes using AI; partner with product marketing to enable internal teams before new capabilities ship.
You Bring
· Demonstrated experience as a Business Analyst, Product Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, or in a similar role within a software or technology environment.
· Proficiency with Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft 365.
· Practical experience using Claude or comparable generative AI tools in a professional environment.
· The ability to write effective prompts, evaluate AI-generated content, recognize inaccurate or incomplete outputs, and edit artifacts to a high professional standard.
· Solid PDLC understanding; ability to read data via Excel, SQL, or BI platforms; comfortable in technical discussions without being a developer
· A solid understanding of how software products are built and how feature decisions connect to business outcomes (revenue, retention, operational efficiency).
· Exceptional written and verbal communication — increasingly means editing AI-generated artifacts to a high standard.
· Strong facilitation and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to align teams that may have different priorities or perspectives.
· Experience working simultaneously across Product Management, Development, Design, Quality Assurance, and business stakeholders.
· The confidence to respectfully challenge stakeholder requests, uncover the underlying need, and determine whether the proposed solution is addressing the right problem.
· A critical mindset and the ability to apply the same level of scrutiny to AI-generated outputs as you would to any other source of information.
· The ability to work effectively through ambiguity while remaining organized, proactive, and focused on outcomes.
A CBAP, CCBA, PMI-PBA, or equivalent certification would be an asset. Demonstrated experience using Claude or other generative AI tools within a professional product or technology environment is valued alongside traditional qualifications.
Who You Are
You are goal-oriented, self-motivated, curious, and a clear communicator.
You take ownership of your work from initial conversation through delivery and validation. You approach ambiguity with curiosity and rigour, ask thoughtful questions, and are not afraid to challenge assumptions when doing so will lead to a better outcome.
You use AI confidently and responsibly—not as a replacement for judgment, but as a tool to work faster and more effectively. You know how to direct, assess, edit, and quality-check AI-generated content rather than treating the first output as finished work.
Most importantly, you care about helping teams build the right solutions, not simply documenting what you have been asked to build.
