Your Role
The Aquatic Team Lead is responsible for the safety and supervision of aquatic staff and patrons using the aquatic facility. Will perform as a professional and dedicated team player in providing the best aquatic service for the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC). Providing team leadership and overseeing and evaluating emergency, operation and maintenance procedures. It is the Team Lead’s responsibility to implement the operational decisions of the aquatic management team and foster a workplace environment that is oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, staff training, and other administrative duties where required. Success in this position requires a high degree of flexibility and an ability to work varying schedules to meet operational needs.
It is a requirement as Full-Time Aquatic Team Leads at RRC to be available to work rotations at Sonny Flett Aquatic Centre located in Fort Chipewyan or any other RRC facility.
Your Responsibilities
- Collaborates regularly with Aquatic Management to ensure a consistent approach to overall leadership of the team; is an effective team player.
- Coach, mentor and develop teammates.
- Make day-to-day decisions regarding patron safety and ensure lifeguard to bather ratios are met.
- Monitor activates of the swimming pools by providing the highest standard of Lifeguarding with emphasis on the prevention of any incidents.
- Provide excellent lifeguarding and instructional service (hands on program delivery).
- Oversee designated shift times, ensuring adherence to provincial legislation, best practices and internal policies and procedures.
- Ensure safe and proper employee rotation, to include breaks.
- Provides World Class services.
- Respond to, or appropriately direct swim lesson and other inquires.
- Act as person in charge of emergency procedures and action plan for staff.
- Assist Aquatic Supervisors and the Aquatic Centre Manager, as required.
- Ensure water tests are complete.
- Ensure equipment and facility checks are completed and report any findings.
- Perform and ensure wristband checks occur on an ongoing basis.
- Provide ongoing feedback in a timely manner.
- Complete reports appropriately, shift reports, incident and first aid forms and in a timely manner.
- Be familiar with opening and closing procedures and perform opening and closing checks.
- Conduct new employee, lifeguard and instructor-in-training and volunteer orientations.
- Ensure the safe use of employee protective equipment.
- Oversee an assigned portfolio of administrative responsibilities which may include (i) first aid, (ii) swim team liaison, (iii) aquatic fitness, (iv) Leadership training, (v) equipment maintenance and retail sales, (vi) Facility maintenance, (vii) assistant lifeguards, or (viii) program inventory and purchasing.
- Assists in the preparation and delivery of regular in-service training events for employees and volunteers.
- Responsible for trouble shooting and handling customer concerns.
- Responsible for educating the public regarding the policies and procedures related to bather safety.
- Maintains order and ensures proper conduct of persons using the facility.
- Will attend all in-service training and monthly skills/fitness challenges.
- Establishes and maintains a cooperative/collaborative working relationship with other departments within the RRC through positive actions and communication.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education & Experience
- Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard
- Current Intermediate (Standard) First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate (including CPR C).
- Lifesaving Swim Instructor Certificate.
- Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) and/or Group Fitness Instructor Certificate.
- Lifesaving Society Head Lifeguard Course or Aquatic Supervisory Training is an asset.
- Pool Operator Level 1 & Level 2 is an asset.
- First Aid Instructor is an asset.
- Minimum of two (2) years of practical work experience as a Lifeguard and Instructor.
- Previous experience and/ or willingness to teach water aerobics.
- Previous experience leading an aquatic team is an asset.
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of lifeguarding principles and practices.
- Knowledge of aquatic instructional programs and evaluation standards.
- Knowledge of safe work practices.
- Knowledge of applicable provincial legislation.
- Ability to promote water safety and drowning prevention through public education and special events.
- Ability and willingness to be flexible in a changing work environment.

Working Conditions
- While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing, standing at a height, sitting, sitting at a height, crouching, walking, climbing, swimming, performing work while wet and/or performing the aforementioned tasks for extended periods of time.
- Emergency tasks and regular staff training events involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing and/or swimming and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling heavy objects including distressed persons on land or in the water, including performing work while wet and/or performing the aforementioned tasks for extended periods of time.
- This position must maintain the ability to demonstrate “Must See” and “Instructional Emergency Response” items from the appropriate governing body’s current publication standards to the satisfaction of the employer at all times of scheduled employment.
- Safe lifting, bending, carrying and rescue techniques and the use of a rescue aid in the water and the coordination of rescue with a second rescuer and rescue aids in the water, when possible, are required.
- Safe use of employee protective equipment is required.
- This position requires a flexible schedule including statutory holidays, early morning, late night, and weekend work.
