VISITOR EXPERIENCE ASSISTANT (PART-TIME, CASUAL, PERMANENT) and EVENT AND RENTAL ASSISTANT (PART-TIME, CASUAL, PERMANENT)
Purpose of the Positions:
As a team player with initiative, the Visitor Experience Assistant will provide skilled support for the education and guest services departments to create an amazing experience for visitors. The weekly hours for this position are Saturday and/or Sunday from 9am-4:30pm. The candidate must also be available for occasional work on evenings, overnights (9pm-9am), and holidays.
This position is primarily responsible for ensuring smooth operation of our front-of-house services, and conducting a range of interpretive services for the public including: educational programs, public presentations, sleepover setup and craft instruction, birthday party programming and tours. Interpreters are also responsible for visitor check-in, cash handling, shop restocking, public information, and cleaning. Preparation assistance for our field trips and facility rentals will also be part of the weekly tasks. All duties must be performed in compliance with occupational health and safety policies.
We are currently searching for 1-2 new team members who are available for these Visitor Experience Assistant shifts as well as evening and weekend shifts related to our events department. As an Event and Rental Assistant the successful candidate is responsible for maintaining relationships with the Museum’s partners and event or meeting room rental clients during their bookings. They will execute facility rental bookings and ensure events meet the standards of our clients, through the plans and contracts provided by the Event and Rental Manager. This position is a casual, part-time, position that has hours based upon the facility rental and event bookings that have been made. Hours are not guaranteed, and will fluctuate dependent upon the season. Estimated monthly hours are between 10-40, but there is no guaranteed minimum number of hours per week or per month.
Being cross-trained across both roles will ensure the successful candidate has more access to shifts as both roles are scheduled based on bookings.
Reporting
As a Visitor Experience Assistant the position reports directly to the Daily Operations and Memberships Manager. As an Event and Rental Assistant the position reports directly to the Event and Rental Manager.

The Hangar Flight Museum is a museum in northeast Calgary that aims to inspire dreams of flight. The Hangar Flight Museum will be a premiere destination to explore, engage, and experience the transformational power of flight. We are storytellers, stewarding and sharing the aviation history of Calgary and western Canada and its impact on our community. The collection holds rare and historically significant military and civilian aircraft.
Qualified Applicants
The Hangar Flight Museum is seeking qualified applicants with strongly developed public speaking and storytelling skills who enjoy working with all ages. Some post-secondary education (preferably in history, anthropology, archaeology, education, or science) would be considered an asset. A successful candidate will be able to work well independently and have good problem solving skills, but also be able to work effectively as part of a team.
Visitor Experience Assistant Key Responsibilities
- Learn the history of aviation in Canada, especially as it pertains to the artifacts in our collection.
- Learn tours and public interpretation methods to provide outstanding visitor experiences
- Research history and science relating to our aircraft
- Perform admissions and gift shop duties. This includes cash handling, shop restocking, answering phone and email inquiries and giving tourist information about Calgary
- Assist with developing and delivering public interpretation programming
- Complete setup and programming for Open Plane Days, sleepovers, birthday parties and youth groups as part of the education team
- Clean the aircraft open for Open Plane Days at the end of the shift to keep our artifacts well-preserved and cared for
- Assist the education team with preparation for field trip programming
- Assist with internal events. We are a small but mighty team at The Hangar that is ‘all hands on deck’ for major events
- Assist with facility rental setup, and staffing where needed (please see Event and Rental Assistant key responsibilities below)
- Maintain a neat and presentable common work area
- Be featured on our social media channels to promote programs, events, and highlight things you have learned about the artifacts in our collection
- Overnight shifts are for sleepover safety, and include setup and cleanup from the evening snack and breakfast (9PM-9AM)
- Other tasks as required
Event and Rental Assistant Key Responsibilities
- Executes facility rental plans as created by the Event and Rental Manager
- Communicates between facility rental clients and contractors or suppliers as needed
- Proactively anticipates and troubleshoots any emerging issues during the planning process and on event day
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety obligations for events
- Assists with Museum internal events including: Open Plane Days, Wings and Wheels: Father's Day weekend, Mother’s Day, Remembrance Day, Family Day, and National Aviation Day
- Ensures rental spaces (including the catering kitchen) are cleaned after use and are ready for regular museum visitation
- Encourages clients to provide the Event and Rental Manager with feedback on their experience
- Communicates emergency needs to the Event and Rental Manager
- Maintains events equipment including audio visual, tables, chairs, etc.
- Communicates stock levels to the Event and Rental Manager to ensure there is enough stock for consumables such as coffee, cups, creamer, etc.

- Knowledge of the Museum industry and interpretation methods is considered an asset
- Knowledge of the aviation industry and military history is considered an asset
- Being able to answer visitor questions in a second language is considered an asset
- Excellent awareness and intuition to ensure the needs of rental clients are met, while keeping visitors and museum artifacts safe
- Excellent time management skills
- Knowledge of events and visitor experience practices; and practical knowledge of museum practices is preferred
- ProServe certification would be considered an asset
- Must be detail oriented with ability to multi-task
Minimum Standards
- High School diploma
- Experience working in an educational or interpretive setting (such as childcare, summer camps, museums, or performing arts)
- Must have an average knowledge of computer software programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher etc. Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite or Canva is considered an asset
- Criminal record check and Vulnerable Sector Search
Physical Demands
- Standing on hard floors for long periods of time
- Moving boxes and other support material (supplies, displays etc.)
- Ability to lift up to 10 kilograms
- Ability to lift and move tables and chairs
Salary
$17-19.00/hour
