Paradise Dock & Lift Inc. is a growing Canadian manufacturer of premium aluminum docks and hydraulic boat lifts. Based in Vernon, British Columbia, we design, manufacture, sell, install, and service our products throughout Canada and the United States.
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to take ownership of the company’s complete accounting and financial function.
Position Overview
This is a hands-on role within a small business. The Controller will be responsible for completing the company’s day-to-day accounting work while also managing financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, cash flow, and process improvement.
The successful candidate will not simply oversee the accounting function. They will personally handle payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, general ledger entries, government remittances, month-end closing, financial reporting, and other financial and administrative duties.
This role is well suited to an experienced CPA who is comfortable working independently, managing a broad range of responsibilities, and completing both high-level financial work and routine accounting tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Accounting
- Process accounts payable invoices and vendor payments
- Prepare customer invoices and manage accounts receivable
- Follow up on overdue customer accounts and coordinate collection efforts
- Process payroll accurately and on schedule
- Maintain employee payroll records, deductions, benefits, vacation balances, and statutory requirements
- Prepare and submit payroll remittances and related filings
- Record deposits, payments, journal entries, and other accounting transactions
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and general ledger accounts
- Maintain accurate and complete accounting records
- Respond to accounting questions from customers, vendors, employees, and management
- Assist with purchasing, expense tracking, and financial administration as required
Financial Reporting and Control
- Complete monthly and year-end closing processes
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts
- Review balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor working capital
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and prior periods
- Prepare financial analysis to support management decisions
- Maintain appropriate accounting controls, approval procedures, and documentation
- Identify errors, weaknesses, or inefficiencies and implement practical improvements
Manufacturing and Inventory Accounting
- Oversee inventory accounting and inventory reconciliations
- Review product costs, manufacturing costs, work-in-progress, and margins
- Assist with job costing and product profitability analysis
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and costing issues
- Work with production and purchasing personnel to improve inventory accuracy
- Support pricing and margin decisions with accurate financial information
Budgeting and Compliance
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process
- Prepare GST, PST, payroll, and other government remittances
- Coordinate corporate tax information and year-end requirements with external accountants
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for annual financial statements and tax filings
- Ensure financial deadlines and regulatory filing requirements are met
- Communicate with banks, accountants, insurers, government agencies, and other external parties
Systems and Process Improvement
- Maintain and improve accounting procedures and workflows
- Improve the accuracy and efficiency of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, and reporting processes
- Support and improve the use of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
- Develop useful financial reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators
- Document accounting processes and ensure procedures are followed consistently
- Assist management with financial, administrative, and operational projects
Qualifications
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation in good standing
- Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or similar role
- Demonstrated experience personally handling payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and month-end closing
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, financial reporting, budgeting, and cash flow management
- Strong understanding of payroll requirements and government remittances
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is strongly preferred
- Experience in manufacturing, inventory accounting, job costing, or product costing is strongly preferred
- Experience working in a small or owner-managed business is considered a strong asset
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a practical, hands-on accounting professional who is comfortable taking responsibility for the entire financial function of a small business.
They are willing and able to process payroll, enter invoices, collect receivables, reconcile accounts, prepare financial statements, and work directly with ownership and management. No accounting task is considered too small or too detailed.
The successful candidate will be organized, dependable, and proactive. They will identify problems, follow issues through to completion, and improve processes without requiring constant direction.
This position requires someone who can move comfortably between routine accounting duties and higher-level financial analysis. The Controller must be equally comfortable processing a vendor invoice, resolving a payroll issue, reviewing inventory costs, preparing a cash flow forecast, and presenting financial results to ownership.
