Position Summary
The Mold Maker & Service Call Technician is responsible for the build, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of injection molds from initial fabrication through production support and customer try-outs. This role requires advanced mold-making skills, the ability to diagnose and resolve molding and mechanical issues, and strong collaboration with engineering, production, and customers. The position also includes mentoring apprentices, supporting service calls, and ensuring molds meet quality, timing, and performance requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Mold Build & Fabrication
- Build new injection molds from concept through completion, including spotting, fitting, and final assembly.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, CAD models, and electronic technical drawings.
- Fabricate mold components to tight tolerances, ensuring proper function and longevity.
- Perform detailed handwork, polishing, and finishing of mold components.
- Ensure proper fit and function of mold components, manifolds, hot runners, and cooling systems.
Mold Assembly, Fitting & Spotting
- Perform mold spotting to verify parting lines, shutoffs, and component alignment.
- Assemble, disassemble, and reassemble molds for inspection, modification, or repair.
- Inspect handwork and component quality prior to mold completion and try-out.
- Complete mold build and inspection checklists in accordance with company standards.
Service Calls & Production Support
- Respond to production issues such as part defects, flashing, misalignment, or mold damage.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues related to molds.
- Perform in-press cleaning, lubrication, adjustments, and minor repairs to minimize downtime.
- Identify root causes of molding issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Support mold try-outs at internal facilities and customer locations, including travel as required.
- Perform or assist with TIG welding repairs on molds and tooling, where qualified, or work toward developing this capability through training.
- Complete emergency tooling repairs at customer facilities using appropriate welding and repair techniques while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Engineering & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with engineers on design improvements, tooling changes, and process optimization.
- Participate in tool kickoff meetings and design reviews if required.
- Provide feedback on manufacturability, serviceability, and long-term mold performance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling quality, efficiency, and reliability.
Apprenticeship & Leadership
- Direct, train, and mentor apprentices in mold-making techniques and shop best practices.
- Schedule line-ups and daily work assignments for apprentices.
- Ensure apprentices follow safety, quality, and documentation standards.
Safety and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean and safe workspace, following all safety policies, PPE requirements, and lockout/tagout procedures where applicable.
- Properly handle, store, and label tooling, materials, and mold components.
- Contribute ideas for improving safety, quality, workflow, and toolroom organization (5S/lean participation if applicable).

Mold Build & Quality
- On-time mold completion rate
- First-try-out success rate
- Compliance with design specifications and tolerances.
- Accuracy and completeness of mold checklists and documentation.
Service & Troubleshooting
- Mean time to repair (MTTR) during service calls or production support.
- Reduction in repeat service calls for the same issue.
- Effectiveness of root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Production uptime improvement following service interventions.
- Quality and durability of tooling repairs, including welded repairs where applicable, minimizing repeat failures.
Efficiency & Cost Control
- Adherence to project timelines and labor estimates.
- Material usage accuracy and waste reduction.
- Contribution to cost-saving design or process improvements.
Apprenticeship & Team Contribution
- Apprentice skill development and task completion accuracy.
- Safety compliance and adherence to shop procedures.
- Collaboration and communication with engineering, production, and customers.
Customer & Stakeholder Satisfaction
- Feedback from internal teams and customers during try-outs and service visits.
- Professional conduct during customer-facing activities.

Required Qualifications:
- Journeyman Mold Maker certification or equivalent experience preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in injection mold building and servicing.
- Strong understanding of injection molding processes and mold construction.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and CAD drawings.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under tight timelines.
- TIG welding experience for mold and tooling repair is considered an asset, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to learn TIG welding as part of the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hot runner systems and manifolds.
- Prior customer-facing service call or field service experience.
- Experience mentoring or training apprentices.
- Familiarity with quality systems, mold documentation, and checklists.
- Experience performing precision TIG welding repairs on injection molds, tooling, and mold components in a toolroom or customer service environment.
Physical & Travel Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, and manipulate mold components and tooling.
- Standing, bending, and working in a shop or press environment for extended periods.
- Willingness to travel to customer or sister facilities as required.
Working Environment:
- Manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, machinery, and industrial equipment
- Use of PPE is mandatory.
- Fast-paced, detail-oriented environment requiring proactive problem-solving and strong communication
