Canadian Network Installations Ltd. (CNI) has been a national telecommunications service partner for more than 25 years. We support telecommunications carriers and customers across Canada with wireless, fibre, network infrastructure, installation, maintenance, upgrades, testing, troubleshooting, and field technical services. We are expanding our Winnipeg team and are looking for experienced Telecommunications Technician / Riggers.
CNI is seeking experienced Telecommunications Technician / Riggers who combine strong hands-on telecommunications technical skills with the ability to safely perform installation and maintenance work on towers, rooftops, poles, and other elevated structures.
This is a hybrid technical and rigging role. The successful candidate must be more than a climber: they must understand the telecommunications equipment they are installing and be capable of testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, maintaining, and documenting the work. At the same time, the technician must be trained, certified, physically capable, and comfortable performing regular work at height.
Technical Skills and Responsibilities:
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace telecommunications and network equipment.
- Install antennas, radios, remote radio equipment, network equipment, cabinets, mounts, brackets, cable supports, and associated hardware.
- Install, route, dress, label, terminate, weatherproof, and test fibre optic, coaxial, Ethernet/data, copper, power, and grounding cabling.
- Perform equipment upgrades, swaps, expansions, modernization work, and site remediation.
- Perform telecommunications equipment testing, commissioning, verification, and basic integration activities.
- Troubleshoot transmission, connectivity, cabling, antenna, equipment, power, grounding, and network-related faults.
- Use applicable telecommunications test equipment to verify fibre, coaxial, Ethernet/data, RF, power, and grounding systems.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, RF designs, installation specifications, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Complete test reports, service reports, deficiency records, site documentation, and closeout packages.
- Follow CNI, customer, manufacturer, and site-specific installation, quality, and safety requirements.
Rigging, Tower & Elevated Work Skills and Responsibilities:
- Safely climb telecommunications towers and other approved structures to install, service, inspect, and maintain telecommunications equipment.
- Perform technical work on towers, rooftops, poles, ladders, platforms, and other elevated structures.
- Install and remove antennas, radios, mounts, brackets, transmission lines, fibre, coaxial cable, and associated hardware at height.
- Assist with lifting, hoisting, positioning, and securing telecommunications equipment and materials using approved methods and equipment.
- Perform cable routing, support, dressing, weatherproofing, and equipment mounting while working aloft.
- Use approved fall-protection, fall-arrest, work-positioning, lifeline, and 100% tie-off systems.
- Inspect climbing, rigging, and personal fall-protection equipment before use.
- Follow established rescue plans, safe-work procedures, lift plans, and site-specific requirements.
- Participate in tower/high-angle rescue procedures as required
Requirements:
- Experience working on communication and transmission towers
- Experience in installation, alignment and testing of microwave hops is an asset
- Telecommunication construction or rigging experience is a must
- Rappelling and high angle rescue training is an asset
- Minimum 1-2 years of telecommunications field experience, preferably involving wireless, tower, RF, fibre, cabling, or network infrastructure.
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent; related telecommunications, electronics, electrical, network, fibre, rigging, or trades education is preferred.
- Hands-on experience installing, maintaining, testing, or troubleshooting telecommunications equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to safely climb and work on telecommunications towers and other elevated structures.
- Good mechanical aptitude and strong working knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Ability to read technical drawings, installation instructions, and equipment documentation.
- Have a valid first aid training
- Able and willing to work out of town for extended period of time
- Able and willing to work at heights
- Working evenings, weekends and on-call if required
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract
- Ability to operate a vehicle and trailer safely
- Clean Criminal Background check
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs without assistance
- Ability to climb to heights up to 500 feet safely
- Ability to work at heights for extended periods of time in all types of weather
Mandatory Safety & Climbing Qualifications
- Current Fall Protection / Working at Heights training or certification applicable to assigned work.
- Current tower climbing safety training/certification or recognized equivalent.
- Competency in fall-arrest, work-positioning, and personal fall-protection systems.
- Tower or high-angle rescue training/certification appropriate to assigned work.
- Ability to demonstrate proper inspection and use of full-body harnesses, 100% tie-off systems, self-retracting lifelines, vertical climbing/lifeline systems, positioning equipment, approved anchors, and related climbing equipment.
Proof of current certifications may be required before employment or assignment to tower and elevated work.
Technical Experience Considered an Asset
- Fibre optic installation, termination, troubleshooting, and OTDR testing.
- Coaxial and hybrid cable installation and testing.
- RF systems, antenna and radio installation, PIM and sweep testing.
- Ethernet, structured cabling, copper, and network equipment.
- DC telecommunications power systems, grounding, bonding, and surge protection.
- Telecommunications cabinets, equipment racks, alarms, commissioning, and integration.
- Cellular, fixed wireless, carrier network upgrades, rooftop sites, and tower-mounted equipment.
- Equipment hoisting, rigging practices, antenna mounts, structural mounting hardware, and cable-support systems.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Able to safely work at significant heights and regularly climb telecommunications towers and other approved structures.
- Able to work outdoors year-round in Manitoba weather conditions.
- Able to lift and carry equipment and materials up to approximately 75 lbs.
- Able to perform physically demanding and repetitive work including bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, standing, and walking.
- Good manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability to distinguish between colours.
- Able to perform detailed technical work while wearing required PPE and fall-protection equipment.
