Serving Nanaimo since 1998, Nellie’s European Deli is a locally owned deli and European grocery store known for made-to-order sandwiches, homemade soups, specialty meats and cheeses, imported groceries, and friendly customer service.
We are looking for a dependable, people-focused Deli Manager who can lead our team while remaining actively involved in the daily operation of the deli.
Position Summary
The Deli Manager is a hands-on leadership position responsible for supporting employees, providing excellent customer service, and helping daily operations run smoothly.
The successful candidate will be confident giving direction, managing multiple priorities, solving problems, and holding employees accountable while maintaining a positive and respectful workplace. We want someone who enjoys working with people and understands that effective leadership is about supporting the team—not simply telling people what to do.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, support, and provide daily direction to deli employees
- Create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for customers
- Work alongside the team preparing sandwiches, salads, and other deli products
- Train and coach employees using a patient and people-focused approach
- Delegate tasks clearly and follow up to ensure they are completed properly
- Help employees understand expectations and provide constructive feedback when needed
- Coordinate breaks, duties, and workflow throughout the day
- Prepare employee schedules and assist with managing labour needs
- Maintain product quality, portion control, presentation, and food-safety standards
- Monitor inventory and assist with ordering deli & grocery products and supplies
- Help reduce food waste and control operating costs
- Receive deliveries and ensure products are stored and rotated correctly
- Handle customer questions, concerns, and complaints professionally
- Operate the cash register and ensure transactions are handled accurately
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe deli and grocery environment
- Identify problems, make practical decisions, and communicate important issues to the owners
- Encourage teamwork, accountability, and a positive workplace culture
- Support store sales by recommending products and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Open or close the store when required

Qualifications
- Previous supervisory or management experience in a deli, restaurant, grocery store, retail, or customer-service environment is preferred
- Experience training, coaching, or directing employees
- Strong communication, organization, and customer-service skills
- Comfortable using technology, including touchscreen point-of-sale (POS) systems, delivery-service tablets and apps, and other computer-based tools used in daily store operations
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- FoodSafe Level 1 certification, or willingness to obtain it
- Experience with food preparation, inventory, ordering, scheduling, or cash handling is an asset
- Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift up to 40 pounds
- Availability to work weekdays and Saturdays as needed
