Full job description

Mission Community Services Society is dedicated to helping people, changing lives, and building community. With a legacy dating back to 1972, MCSS has continuously strived to support community members in need.

The Accounting Manager provides oversight and support to the Finance Department and leads the accounting team. The individual is skilled at transaction processing and review as well as supporting the team in their responsibilities. The position ensures compliance with GAAP, in particular, aspects related to not-for-profit and charity organizations. The Accounting Manager is responsible for assisting the Director of Finance with budget development and monitoring, as well as assisting with the issuance of internal and external financial statements. This position will often be working under deadlines and must exercise professional judgment. The Accounting Manager provides input into the plans for organizational and operational strategies for the Agency, and as it relates to accounting. The Accounting Manager will have direct contact with MCSS Directors and Managers, which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal.

What you'll do:

Oversees a team of employees who provide accounting services for the organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, petty cash, monthly financial transactions and reports, ledger entries, reporting of variances, and other financial reports.
Provides support, leadership, direction,and supervision to direct reports using a variety of techniques including coaching, training, skill development,discipline,and attendance management.
Evaluates the performance of direct reports on a regular basis and provides feedback.
Conducts six-month probationary period and yearly performance evaluations.
In collaboration with the Director, identifies staff needs such as training,management,and personal development.
In collaboration with the Director and Human Resources Department, managesand followsthehiringprocess for all new hires, including volunteers and practicum students, including recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and preparing/updating job descriptions, as required.
In partnership with the Director, recruits, selects, onboards, trains, and assigns duties to practicum students and volunteers according to agency policy and best practices, in coordination with the Human Resources Department and Volunteer Coordinator.
Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with staff to provide ongoing support and problem resolution.
Manages and approves payroll hours, expense claimsand schedules for direct reports.

Program Operations

Assists the Directors and Program Managers in the development and monitoring of budgets for each program, investigating variances with the team, and submits to the Director for review.
Assists the Director with the interpretation and review of MCSS policies and procedures, providing recommendations for change.
Supports the Director in implementing and managing initiatives that support the desired organizational culture and organizational change.
Provides guidance, support and oversight to program areas and administration, providing advice and direction as per best practices, policies, and procedures.
Develops and implements new procedures and features to enhance workflow.
Monitors and analyzes the work of the Program to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
In collaboration with the Director, assists in developing, implementing, and administering the department’s and/or program’s strategic plan.
Responds to inquiries from the Director, or from other Directors and Managers in other departments of MCSS, regarding financial results, and special reporting requests.
Maintains an awareness of trends and initiatives in the assigned areas of responsibility.

Finance

Assists with the preparation of accurate and meaningful internal financial statements for the Finance Committee, Departmental Directors, Managers, and Funders.
Assists the Director in the preparation of year-end financial reports and financial statements for audit purposes, and to ensure an efficient, accurate, and timely year-end audit.
Ensures all financial information has been processed in accordance with MCSS financial policies, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and funder expectations.
Reviews monthly variance reports and takes corrective action as required.

Administration

Assists with Program administrative tasks, collecting and managing employee documentation as required.
Keeps up to date and ensures compliance with various Program related legislative requirements and emerging trends.
Participates in relevant committees, working groups, and associations, as required.
Remains in compliance with MCSS Finance policies.
Represents the Agency and the community in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
Participates in all MCSS essential training.
Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

What you bring:

Education and Certification

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
Accounting designation, Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), or actively working towards a CPA designation.
Must maintain a satisfactory criminal record check.

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years of experience and responsibility in full cycle accounting which includes revenues and receivables, expenses and payables, and payroll.

Knowledge and Skill Set:

Strong verbal, written, and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with a wide variety of people, and from all levels within the organization (e.g., employees, senior management, peers) and external partners (funders, clients, vendors).
Able to effectively relay accounting policies and procedures in plain language that is easily understood.
Demonstrated planning, organizing, and time management skills; able to manage competing priorities and ongoing issues and initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to think critically, systematically, and analytically, taking a holistic approach to developing and implementing processes, policies, and practices across the agency.
Strong research and analytical skills; able to create and implement analysis and evaluation tools.
Demonstrated supervisory skills including coaching, mentoring, goal setting, problem solving, building relationships and trust, and creating autonomy and accountability.
Strong computer literacy; able to use a variety of devices, software, and applications including Microsoft Office365 and virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
Proficient in using Excel and accounting software.
Demonstrated facilitation skills; able to effectively facilitate and lead in a variety of situations.
Effective interpersonal skills.

Strong business writing skills including report writing.
