Uncommon Cider is an award-winning cidery based in Calgary. As Alberta’s first craft cidery, we have helped pioneer and grow the demand for uncommonly good cider. With 50% growth over each of the past two years, we are continuing to grow rapidly and are looking for the right person to help lead our production.
Reporting to the Founders, the Cider Maker will oversee day-to-day cider production, quality control, inventory and packaging coordination. This role requires a passion for craft, strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, a positive attitude, and a drive to create exceptional products. We expect that this role would grow into operations management, including building and managing a small production team.

Key Responsibilities:
Cider making
- Oversee day-to-day cider production, including fermentation, blending, packaging preparation, cellar work, cleaning and record keeping.
- Carry out, monitor, and record fermentations in line with SOPs.
- Prepare blends according to product requirements and recipe specifications.
- Coordinate packaging runs with third-party partners.
Production Planning & Operations:
- Work with the Founders to set quarterly and annual production goals.
- Develop production schedules to meet sales forecasts while making efficient use of equipment, labour, raw materials, and packaging supplies.
- Maintain inventory control and order consumable supplies as needed.
- Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and efficient production environment.
- Develop, update, and maintain procedures, SOPs, and checklists where necessary.
- Ensure all cider making equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and serviced.
- Maintain equipment, keep up to date CIP, maintenance and servicing records.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Maintain quality control procedures throughout the cider-making process, including sensory evaluation, lab analysis, quality audits, and production checks.
- Ensure strict adherence to recipe specifications, sanitation protocols, food-safe handling, and storage practices.
- Maintain accurate quality and production records.
- Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal licensing and permit regulations.
- Maintain a safe working environment for all production employees.
Product Development, and Brand Support:
- Experiment and innovate! Develop new trial products in line with sales goals and brand direction.
- Refine recipes of current products, with an eye to innovation and continuous improvement.
- Stay current on industry trends, competitor activities, and market conditions.
- Represent Uncommon Cider at festivals and promotional events.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
- Passion for cider and craft beverage production. Knowledge of cider making processes an asset.
- Exceptional sensory skills.
- Minimum of 3 years recent experience in a cider, wine or beer production role.
- Proven experience in a management role within the hospitality or craft alcohol industry.
- Familiarity with production and inventory management systems; experience with Breww is an asset.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Experience leading, training, or supervising small teams is an asset.
- Understanding of local liquor regulations and compliance.
- ProServe certificate.
- Forklift ticket.
- Class 5 drivers license and clean abstract.
- Ability to spend long hours standing and lift 50L filled kegs.
