About the Role
The SANE Professional Practice and Education Coordinator reports directly to the SANE Program Manager and plays a key role in supporting the clinical practice, education, and operational coordination of the Avalon Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program. This role ensures that SANEs are equipped with the knowledge, training, and professional supports necessary to provide high-quality, trauma-informed, medical and forensic care to individuals who have experienced sexual violence.
Working closely with the Program Manager, the Coordinator supports the development, delivery, and monitoring of education, competency development, and professional practice standards for the SANE team. This includes coordinating onboarding and orientation processes, tracking training and certification requirements, supporting continuing education initiatives, and helping maintain systems that monitor skills competency and professional development. The role also contributes to identifying learning needs and practice gaps within the team and supports the implementation of education or improvement strategies that strengthen clinical practice and program quality.
In addition to coordinating professional practice and education activities, the Professional Practice and Education Coordinator manages administrative functions related to the recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding of contract Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, ensuring compliance with documentation requirements, licensing standards, and program policies. They support the organization of training events, monthly SANE meetings, and provincial education requirements while maintaining accurate records related to professional practice and competency compliance.
The SANE Professional Practice and Education Coordinator functions as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner on-call response team member (no more than two 12-hour shifts/week). They provide SANE team on-call support on a rotational basis with the Program Manager and Professional Practice & Education Coordinator, while also providing leadership, role modelling, and enthusiasm for learning and enhancement of professional practice as a SANE.
Key Responsibilities
Candidate Screening & Interview Scheduling (15%):
- Collaborate with the Program Manager and Site & Scheduling Coordinator regarding the hiring of SANEs to ensure adequate program coverage
- Coordinate and conduct interviews under direction of, and in collaboration with, Program Manager and Site & Scheduling Coordinator
- Complete issuance of reference checks and direct completed submissions to Program Manager
Onboarding and Offboarding (15%):
- Act as primary administrative contact for SANEs regarding questions or issues related to onboarding/offboarding processes
- Onboarding Process:
- Under the direction of the SANE Program Manager, send out comprehensive welcome packets, including orientation schedules, program policies, and necessary contracts and agreements
- Monitor the completion and submission of required documentation (licenses, certificates, confidentiality agreements, etc.) and training/orientation sessions
- Coordinate the setup of access to essential tools and platforms (email accounts, SANEOPEDIA SharePoint account, etc.)
- Offboarding Process:
- Coordinate the offboarding process for SANE contract employees, including exit interviews, the collection of program materials, and revoking access to digital and security platforms
Professional Practice and Education Monitoring (35%):
- Coordinates and provides Avalon SANE Support Role orientation and education with support of Program Manager
- Communicates, shares, monitors and maintains completion of pre-requisite tasks/training required of NSH Provincial SANE training sessions
- Collaborates in coordination, communication and sharing of logistical information pertaining to mandatory SANE training events
- Works in collaboration with SANE Program Manager to organize and host education content for monthly SANE meetings
- In consultation with the Program Manager, distinguishes between learning needs and practice gaps related to performance execution, and works collaboratively with the Program Manager to deliver improvement practices
- Revises educational programs using data gleaned through evaluation in collaboration with Program Manager
- Shares relevant community events and educational opportunities with members of the Avalon SANE team
- Designs, implements, and maintains a skills competency monitoring program for SANE program staff development in consultation with Program Manager
- Maintains records of and monitors required annual competency compliance amongst SANE team members, including licensing with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN), annual CPR (re)certifications, etc.
General Administrative and Team Support Duties (35%):
- In collaboration with SANE Program Manager and Site and Scheduling Coordinator, completes case review and statistical data entry to support analysis for long-term program outcomes and supports
- Function as a SANE on-call team member as needed (maximum of two 12-hour on-call shifts per week, unless mutually agreed upon between Coordinator and Program Manager)
- Provide on-call SANE consultation and coordination support in collaboration with SANE Program Manager and additional Site & Scheduling Coordinator
- Shares responsibility with Program Manager, Site & Scheduling Coordinator and/or Avalon Centre organizational pillars/leaders in developing and delivering Avalon Centre SANE Program education sessions to community partners and stakeholders
- Support any additional administrative tasks as assigned by the SANE Program Manager
- When relevant, participate in organizational and provincial team meetings to stay informed of changes within the SANE and Avalon programs
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing or commensurate experience of education required
- Five (5) years nursing experience preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experienced may be considered
- Three (3) years nursing leadership experience an asset. Non-nursing leadership experience may be considered
- Successful completion of a recognized sexual assault/forensic nurse program required
- Current and valid registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing in good standing
- Current certification in BCLS required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines efficiently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
The SANE Professional Practice and Education Coordinator must:
- Have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license
- Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Abuse Registry upon hire
Additional Competencies and Knowledge
- Understanding of sexualized violence and sexual assault trauma
- Utilize a feminist and trauma-informed lens in practice
- Knowledge of the impacts of trauma work on staff, as well as best practices to mitigate vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout an asset
- Knowledge of the legal system is an asset
- Dedication to ongoing learning applicable to leadership, best practices within medical/forensic field, and personal growth

Working Conditions
- Hours: This is a part-time, permanent position requiring 21 hours per week. Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm (with 1-hour unpaid lunch break). Occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on program needs.
- Location: This position requires reporting to our Halifax office and may require travel within HRM and Nova Scotia, including the possibility of overnight travel. Avalon is pleased to support remote work when viable.
- Compensation: $54/hour, with eligibility for benefits and RRSP
