Greenhouse & Horticulture Field Operations Manager, Plant Sciences

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To manage the greenhouses and the day-to-day activities of the Horticulture Field Operations. This includes overseeing the smooth and efficient operation of these facilities and the equipment located at these areas.

NATURE OF WORK:

Reports to the Chairs of the PLSC Growth Facilities and the PLSC Horticultural Committees. The manager is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the department’s greenhouses and horticulture field plots and grounds. This position will be a liaison between the various research programs operating at the greenhouse and the Horticulture Field Facility and the Chairs of the PLSC Growth Facilities and the PLSC Horticultural Committees. The position is responsible for the assignment of duties and supervision of the greenhouse and general horticulture field technicians, and recruits, trains and supervises casual staff and summer students. The manager also contributes to the execution of daily operations at the greenhouse, horticulture field plots and gardens. The manager requires independent judgment and exercises discretionary decision making; the work requires innovative thinking, effective relationship-building and communication skills.

ACCOUNTABILITES:

Greenhouse Management:

Accountable for the success of others through effective recruitment, training and supervision
Accountable for a well-maintained and functioning greenhouse
Contributes to the execution of daily operations of the greenhouse
Establish and administer a computerized billing procedure for quarterly billing of greenhouse rental
Respond to alarm calls forwarded by Campus Security in coordination with greenhouse technician
Facilitate daily operation of greenhouses in coordination with greenhouse technician
Oversees care and maintenance of the Beamish Conservatory in the Agriculture Building including supervision of the Atrium plant care
Applies and communicates knowledge of University safety protocols and policies appropriately to others
Identify problems, determine urgency and solve them accordingly

Horticulture Field Facilities Management:

Oversees all aspects of the daily operation of the horticulture field plots and gardens, in consultation with the Chair of the PLSC Horticulture Committee and in coordination with Horticulture Field Facility technicians
Accountable for a well-maintained and functioning horticulture facilities, field plots (research and breeding) and gardens
Contributes to the execution of daily operations of the horticulture field plots and gardens
Accountable for the success of others through effective recruitment, training and supervision of casual staff and summer students
Responsible for maintenance of research and breeding fields, gardens and ornamental plantings for 70 acres of horticulture-related research and demonstration plots. Includes planning and implementation of grounds, protected growth infrastructure and field activities; mowing, mulching, spraying, tillage, irrigation, pruning, pest and animal control, material removal, access road and research and breeding infrastructure maintenance and installation,
Implementation of effective land management plans in consultation with the Horticulture Field Committee
Responsible for overseeing the general maintenance of the Patterson Gardens
Applies and communicates knowledge of University safety protocols and policies appropriately to others
Identify problems, determine urgency and solve them accordingly.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in plant sciences, horticulture or biology including training and experience in greenhouse management. Possession of a valid driver’s license and a Pesticide Applicator’s license.

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience working as a greenhouse grower and/or manager of a horticulture plant production facility. Must have a strong knowledge in the area of horticulture including orchard crops, arboriculture and vegetable crops, as well as knowledge of research techniques used in field crop research. Must possess a good working knowledge of plant physiology to recognize disease, stress and insect problems that may arise and make recommendations to users on how to resolve problems. Experience must include supervision of staff and familiarity with a wide range of field and plot maintenance equipment

Skills: Ability to work independently and to practice effective decision making. Proven effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff and students, with sensitivity to and knowledge of cultural differences; must be willing to accommodate and support neurodiverse individuals in the work force; ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities; management, organizational and time-management skills; excellent communication skills. Familiarity with electronic systems for monitoring and control of greenhouse environments is an asset. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint) as well as internet and email software applications. Attention to detail and creative problem-solving abilities. Proven ability to effectively manage time and to ensure project deadlines are met.
