ROLE OVERVIEW
The Disability Accommodation Specialist leads accessibility and accommodation supports across Ase Community Foundation’s programs, services, and events, ensuring participants can access culturally affirming, trauma-informed, and neuro-inclusive programming grounded in Ase’s commitment to Black disability justice.
This role combines individualized participant support with broader accessibility and systems-change work. The Specialist will lead accommodation planning, assess functional impacts, support disclosure readiness and self-advocacy, and design workplace supports that reflect each participant’s needs, goals, and lived experience.
The ideal candidate is a trauma-informed disability, rehabilitation, social work, occupational therapy, or disability advising professional with experience developing workplace accommodations for Black people with disabilities, while advising staff, partners, and employers on inclusive practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accommodation Planning & Individualized Support
● Lead the development and implementation of participant and staff Individualized Workforce Plans (IWPs) grounded in culturally affirming, trauma-informed, and neuroaffirming principles.
● Conduct intake and functional assessments to identify disability-related accommodation needs.
● Review medical and psycho-educational documentation to inform appropriate, evidence-based accommodation planning.
● Design individualized accommodation strategies, including assistive technology, workplace supports, and referrals to external clinicians as needed.
Case Management, Disclosure & Participant Support
● Provide ongoing case management, progress monitoring, and participant support throughout the accommodation process.
● Support participants in understanding how disability or health conditions may affect school-to-work transitions, job search, workplace performance, and career progression.
● Prepare participants for assessments, accommodation requests, disclosure decisions, and workplace conversations.
● Support participants in building self-advocacy skills and navigating disability-related rights, workplace accommodations, and support systems.
Accessibility Strategy & Systems Change
● Develop and implement accessibility strategies, tools, standards, and practices across programs and services.
● Identify and address systemic barriers to participation, engagement, and employment outcomes.
● Provide accessibility training and capacity-building support for staff, partners, and employers.
● Advise employers, HR teams, and managers on functional accommodations, inclusive workplace practices, and return-to-work approaches.
Program Integration & Inclusive Delivery
● Integrate accessibility across all stages of programming, including onboarding, workshops, placements, training, and events.
● Assess and coordinate accommodations for program activities and participant engagement.
● Support the delivery of disability confidence, self-advocacy, and workplace readiness programming.
● Ensure all services are aligned with disability justice, intersectional frameworks, confidentiality requirements, and participant-centred practice.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
● Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology, Education, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies, or a related field
● Minimum 2 years of experience developing, implementing, and monitoring accommodation plans for people, youth, and students with disabilities
● Demonstrated experience conducting intake, functional assessments, and accommodation
planning to support participants in education, employment, workforce development, or community-based settings.
● Experience reviewing clinical documentation, including medical, psychological, and psycho-educational assessments, to inform the development of the IWPs
● Demonstrated experience supporting individuals experiencing emotional distress, conflict, disclosure-related concerns, or systemic barriers related to accessibility
● Strong understanding of disability issues, accessibility, workplace accommodations, human rights, duty to accommodate, AODA, and equity-based service delivery.
● Experience writing and maintaining accurate, confidential case notes, accommodation summaries, participant records, and related documentation.
● Ability to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team, exercising initiative, tact, discretion, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills.
● Excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, reading, oral, and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
● Experience working within the Black, disability, diaspora with a strong understanding of the Black Feminist Disability Framework and disability justice.
● Proficiency in digital platforms for (e.g. Google Suite, MS365), evaluation (e.g. SurveyMonkey, CRM systems (e.g. Salesforce), & project management (e.g. Monday.com)
● Familiarity with using AI tools, assistive technologies, and emerging digital tools to support accessibility planning, accommodation-related research, documentation, resource development, and knowledge mobilization.
● A valid Vulnerable Sector Check is required or must be completed within the first month of starting the role.
ASSETS
● Lived and/or professional experience at the intersection of Blackness and disability
● Experience working with nonprofit organizations and community partners
● Experience supporting Black youth, adults, students, or job seekers with disabilities.
● Training or certification related to accessibility, counselling, trauma-informed practice, disability management, return-to-work planning, or case management.
● French language proficiency.
