As a Marketing Officer with a focus on donor stewardship, you are joining a group of amazing Advancement and Marketing professionals who work hard to create impactful experiences that build pride and support the fundraising priorities of the University of Manitoba. As UM prepares for its 150th anniversary and its next major philanthropic campaign, this role is integral to stewarding not only our current donors but also engaging new donors. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead, strategize and support work across our Advancement Marketing team.
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Undergraduate degree is required, in Communications, Marketing, Philanthropy or a related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of three years of directly related experience required, in donor relations/stewardship and/or marketing and communications, preferably in higher education or a comparably complex organization.
- Experience in project management required.
- Related experience in stewardship and donor relations is preferred.
- Experience working with a donor database, such as Raiser’s Edge, is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent verbal communication skill with the ability to communicate with partners, donors, senior leaders is required.
- Excellent written communication skill with advancement and/or copy writing experience is required.
- Superior organization skills and time/priority-management to coordinate and establish work priorities and deadlines required.
- Excellent customer service and relationship building skills – experience working with both internal and external stakeholders to achieve success and inspire collaboration required.
- Excellent project management skills required, prioritizing and advancing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail is required.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound independent judgments and use problem solving abilities required.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to donors and the university required.
- Ability to work independently and on a team to produce outstanding and accurate materials in a high volume, deadline-oriented environment required.
- Flexibility and willingness to take on additional and varied tasks as the need arises is required.
- Ability to generate strategic and creative solutions for thanking, recognizing, engaging donors to advance the university’s fundraising efforts and deepen relationships with donors is required.
- Ability to be a goal-oriented self-starter, with a high level of independence, initiative and energy is required.
- Digitally savvy with a desire to adopt and implement new technologies an asset (experience with databases and content management systems).
- Ability to create on-brand messaging and to adopt established language and style guidelines an asset.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support stewardship and university events.
Stewardship
- Support the development and lead assigned implementation of integrated, multi-channel stewardship plans tailored to different donor segments as part of overall stewardship program.
- Ensure stewardship program reflects consistent recognition and engagement across all donor giving levels.
- Provide recommendations for strategic engagement opportunities for donors at all levels.
- Research and recommend projects that maintain donors’ engagement with the university, including letters of support, award nominations, etc.
- Develop and coordinate recognition opportunities for donors in university publications.
- In collaboration with Donor Relations, and led by the Events teams, support donor recognition events including gift announcements, annual student awards event, and UM campus events that incorporate donor stewardship opportunities.
- Lead development of invitation strategies in consultation with Donor Relations, Associate Vice President, and identify special moments, gifts and keepsakes, etc.
- Provide on-site event support including welcoming donors and guests and support to the event lead.
- Advise colleagues on appropriate recognition of donors in program materials, scripts, etc.
- Responsible for planning and deployment of celebratory donor communications (e.g. birthdays, holidays).
- With oversight of the Supervisor, Stewardship, management of the donor naming opportunities inventory and naming valuations.
- Manage donor recognition signage associated with philanthropic namings, following the design naming system standards and advising colleagues on appropriate design and placement across the university.
- Manage naming recommendation process for Senate approval in alignment with Senate meeting schedule.
- Maintain stewardship activity tracking and assist in program evaluation.
- Work with Advancement Services colleagues to ensure stewardship activities are recorded in the database of record and that donor records are accurately maintained.
- Stay up to date on best practices for naming recognition practices.
Marketing and Communications
- Content development, writing and editing across a variety of communications platforms including print publications, web and digital content, and video.
- Support marketing communications plans and strategies for initiatives and activities within Advancement Marketing.
- Work collaboratively with design and creative and digital teams to ensure the most effective integrated approach to marketing communications objectives.
- Employ best practice strategies and effective project management to ensure projects achieve objectives and are implemented on time and on budget.
- Identify opportunities for efficiencies and synergies across Advancement Marketing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
