Job Summary
The Accounting Controller provides day-to-day financial expertise across the organization, working closely with the Vice President, Residential Accounting, and other key leaders in support of the company's strategic mission, vision, and goals.
This position pertains to the Hotels and Specialties area of the business and is primarily accountable for all matters related to hotel and specialty accounting, including financial reporting, maintenance of the Company's general ledger, system-driven accounting processes, and ensuring all transactions and documentation comply with Company policies and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hotel accounting management, a deep understanding of full-cycle accounting systems, and practical knowledge of hotel operating platforms and processes, including:
- Property management and reservation systems
- Point-of-sale systems
- Inventory management
- Payment processing
- Payroll and timekeeping systems
- Vendor management
- Daily and night audit controls
This role is crucial to ensuring the efficient operation of accounting within a fast-growing organization while maintaining strong internal controls and compliance standards. The Accounting Controller supports both the accounting department and operational teams to ensure accurate and timely financial information.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for real estate projects and portfolios.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and analyze budgets, forecasts, and financial performance reports for real estate properties and investments.
Hotel Accounting Operations
- Oversee and support the Hotel Accountant and Senior Property Accountant team, providing guidance and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and applicable accounting standards.
- Manage general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, and month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial reports, cash flow requirements, payment runs, and other management reporting as required.
- Monitor hotel financial performance by reviewing revenue, occupancy, operating metrics, and other key financial indicators.
- Support hotel operational accounting processes, including reservations, front desk operations, point-of-sale systems, payment processing, inventory controls, payroll, and cash management.
- Review and reconcile hotel system reports and transactions, ensuring the accuracy of revenue reporting, guest ledger activity, deposits, credit card transactions, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Collaborate with hotel operations teams to improve systems, reporting processes, integrations, and internal workflows while identifying and mitigating operational and financial risks.
- Coordinate vendor administration activities, including vendor setup, payment processing, service transitions, contract handovers, and continuity of critical hotel services.
- Support hotel acquisitions, openings, transitions, and operational integrations by assisting with system implementations, inventory reviews, financial reconciliations, and process handovers.
- Assist with utility management, vendor relationships, and other operational accounting functions as required.
- Complete special projects and other duties as assigned by management.
Tax & Compliance
- Prepare and file corporate tax returns and ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal tax regulations.
- Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements related to real estate transactions, including property tax filings.
- Manage audits and coordinate with external auditors during year-end financial audits.
Team Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with senior management, real estate professionals, and project managers to assess financial performance and support strategic decision-making.
- Provide regular updates and insights regarding portfolio financial performance.
- Support the development of long-term financial strategies, forecasts, and growth initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in hotel accounting management.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

Systems & Process Skills
- Ability to learn, evaluate, and improve hotel systems and process flows.
- Experience with or ability to quickly learn:
- Sage 300 or similar accounting software
- Yardi Breeze, Yardi Voyager, or similar property management/accounting platforms
- Opera or comparable reservation systems
- POS platforms
- NAVI and inventory management tools
- Dayforce or comparable payroll systems
- Related reporting exports and reconciliation processes
Knowledge
- In-depth knowledge of hotel accounting operations, including property management and reservation systems, channel management, point-of-sale systems, accounting platforms, inventory management, payroll and timekeeping systems, merchant processing, daily audit procedures, guest ledger management, revenue controls, and hotel performance reporting.
Certifications
- CPA designation, or actively pursuing a CPA designation, is required.
