Discover TRIUMF , Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.
Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.
TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
Our Radiation Protection Group is looking to fill an important role for TRIUMF. Could this position be for you?
Our Radiation Surveyors play a vital role in keeping TRIUMF’s world-class research environment safe and operational. You would be responsible for monitoring and maintaining site-wide radiological hygiene, collecting and documenting radiation data, and helping ensure that cutting-edge science is conducted safely. Working closely with scientists, engineers, and technical teams, you would provide expert radiation safety guidance and support safe access to radiation-controlled areas. The role also contributes to radiation protection instruction and training initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for you to build specialized expertise, work alongside leading researchers, and make a meaningful impact at Canada’s national particle accelerator facility.
- Conduct routine radiological hygiene monitoring including site walkthroughs and spot-checks for loose contamination
- Perform radiation surveys of high active areas on site
- Gather, assay, and record results of environmental sampling
- Assist in safely opening beamlines or radiation areas for others to work
- Provide radiation related guidance, advice, and assistance to other service groups
- Sign off work permits
- Calibrate and verify proper operation of radiation protection instrumentation
- Assist senior group members in providing radiation protection training
- Operate advanced radiation protection instrumentation and interpret data
- Configure, calibrate, and maintain personnel dosimetric instrumentation
- Maintain Radiation Protection Group records, documentation, and procedures as required
- Assist members of the Waste Management Group in disposing of radioactive waste from the site
Given the complexity of TRIUMF’s operations, the role of a Radiation Protection Surveyor may include any or all of the following:
- wearing specialized protective or safety equipment such as breathing apparatus, safety harness, full protection suits, or radiation protection.
- holding things while moving and raising an object using the hands and arms
- lifting
- being exposed to elevated places and going up and down ladders longer than two meters in length, scaffolds, or catwalks.
- working in confined space that requires getting into uncomfortable positions (on occasion)
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential to excel in this position.
- A basic knowledge of radiation protection and its associated quantities and units, principles of radiation dosimetry, and a general understanding of gamma spectroscopy and related electronics are required.
- Laboratory experience and a deeper understanding of radiation phenomena and it's interaction with matter are considered assets.
- Knowledge in instrumentation, physics background and previous experience in OH&S would all be considered assets for this position.
The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
Minimum qualifications include graduation from a relevant program at a technical institution. In addition, this position requires experience working in a laboratory or similar environment for at least one year.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
