We are looking for an experienced and reliable Traffic Control Technician – Team Lead to support our municipal and flagging operations. This position is ideal for someone with strong field experience, proven leadership ability, and a solid understanding of safe traffic control practices.
Position Summary
The Traffic Control Technician – Team Lead will be responsible for running traffic control crews in the field for municipal and flagging operations.
This role requires previous experience leading a traffic crew, setting up and maintaining safe work zones, managing crew members, communicating with contractors and site supervisors, and ensuring all traffic control setups are completed safely, correctly, and professionally.
This is a leadership position for someone who already understands traffic control operations and can confidently take charge of a crew on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead traffic control and flagging crews on municipal roads, construction sites, and public right-of-way projects.
- Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices according to traffic control plans and site requirements.
- Perform single-lane alternating traffic operations using stop/slow paddles and radios.
- Complete lane closures, shoulder closures, pedestrian detours, sidewalk closures, and work zone setups.
- Ensure all signs, cones, barrels, barricades, and other traffic control devices are placed correctly and maintained throughout the shift.
- Review traffic control plans before work begins and communicate setup requirements to crew members.
- Monitor the work zone throughout the shift to ensure it remains safe, clean, and compliant.
- Direct and support crew members to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
- Communicate with site supervisors, inspectors, contractors, municipal representatives, and internal dispatch/supervisors.
- Complete required paperwork, including daily site logs, JSA forms, inspection reports, time records, and traffic control documentation.
- Report any incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or traffic control plan changes immediately.
- Ensure crew members are wearing proper PPE and following company safety policies.
- Operate company vehicles safely and complete pre-trip inspections as required.
- Maintain a professional attitude when dealing with clients, workers, pedestrians, motorists, and the public.
Required Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of OTM Book 7, including municipal lane closures, flagging operations, signage placement, tapers, and work zone safety requirements.
- Minimum 2 years of experience leading a traffic control crew in the field.
- Valid Ontario G driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work days, nights, weekends, overtime, and short-notice shifts when required.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, load, and unload traffic control equipment.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Professional attitude and ability to represent the company well on site.
Preferred Qualifications
- OTM Book 7 Certification
- Traffic Control Person / Flagger training.
- WHMIS.
- First Aid and CPR.
- Working at Heights.
- Previous municipal, utility, road construction, or infrastructure project experience.
- Experience using mobile apps for timekeeping, forms, site logs, or scheduling.

This is a unionized position under LiUNA Local 183. All wages, benefits, and pension contributions are determined in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
