Overview:
This position requires a focused individual with a diverse skill set, encompassing strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and structural engineering expertise. As an integral member of our team, the Junior Structural Designer will contribute to the seamless execution of projects by preparing structural drawings, applying building codes and statutes, conducting site visits, utilizing CAD software effectively, while maintaining high standards of accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism.

The candidate will fill a full time position, with a 6 month probationary period.
Responsibilities:
1. Structural Designs:
Applying structural engineering principles in designing structures for small-scale residential projects, specifically with custom homes. Applying modern building codes such as parts 4 and 9 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), and CSA codes such as in wood, steel, and concrete. This position requires critical thinking and a very strong attention to detail.
· Formulating structural engineering calculations.
· Preparing structural drawings, and markups (redlines).
· Providing structural design solutions to a multitude of problems in modern residential construction.
2. Site Visits and Inspections, Site Measures: Conducting site visits, referencing drawings, and gathering essential data to support project planning and design; requires a meticulous individual with strong attention to detail, excellent observational skills, and a solid understanding of inspection techniques and construction drawings.
· Conduct site visits to gather accurate and comprehensive data related to the project requirements; perform field inspections, and report to the principal engineer.
· Measuring homes to formulate full floor plans via AutoCAD.
· Prepare project and inspection reports, including detailed measurements, sketches, and photographs to document inspection findings.
· Assist with administrative work such as preparing building permit applications.
· Assisting the principle engineer by drafting site reports, filing documentation, and reviewing plans.
· Collaborate with clients, architects, and contractors to provide input for project design and planning.
3. Shop Drawings and Building Plans: Ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and feasibility of shop drawings and building plans in alignment with project requirements and industry standards; requires a meticulous individual with a strong eye for detail, general knowledge of construction practices, and the ability to interpret and analyze technical drawings.
· Review shop drawings, building plans, and related technical documents to ensure compliance with project specifications, codes, regulations, and standards.
· Verify that the shop drawings accurately reflect the design intent and coordination among different disciplines.
· Analyze architectural and structural drawings for accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
· Reference markups (redlines) prepared by principal engineer with final permit or construction drawings.
· Identify and resolve any discrepancies, errors, or omissions in the drawings and specifications by collaborating with project teams, architects, engineers, and contractors.
· Provide constructive feedback and guidance to contractors to ensure the timely and accurate revision of shop drawings.
· Assess the feasibility and practicality of proposed construction methods and materials in relation to the project requirements.
· Maintain thorough documentation of the review process, including comments, revisions, and approvals.
· Stay updated with relevant building codes, regulations, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and quality assurance.
4. Structural Software Expertise: Utilizing structural design softwares & tools to perform calculations & provide reports, more specifically:
· Microsoft Excel.
· Woodworks.
· Skyciv.
5. CAD & Software Expertise: Utilizing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create accurate and detailed technical drawings, models, and visualizations for engineering projects; requires a skilled individual with a strong understanding of CAD principles.
· Utilize CAD software to create detailed technical drawings, 2D/3D models, and visualizations based on project specifications and requirements.
· Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and designers to understand project objectives and translate them into precise CAD drawings.
· Ensure accuracy and adherence to applicable standards and codes in all CAD deliverables.
· Incorporate design changes and modifications into existing CAD drawings as directed by project teams.
· Conduct regular quality checks to identify and resolve any errors, inconsistencies, or discrepancies in CAD drawings.
· Maintain CAD libraries, templates, and standards to enhance efficiency and consistency across projects.
· Collaborate with project teams to support design reviews, presentations, and coordination efforts.
· Stay updated with the latest CAD software features, tools, and best practices to optimize design processes and output quality.
· Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues regarding CAD software usage and troubleshooting.
6. Administration
· Preparing Engineering and field reports.
· Preparing fee proposals & quotes.
· Filing documentation.
· Applying for city permits, resolving city notices or changemarks.
· General Administrative tasks.
Requirements:
- Reliability and punctuality is mandatory.
- Class “G” driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle is mandatory.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with the team, clients, contractors and designers.
- Ability to work independently to meet project deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills to identify errors, discrepancies, and technical issues.
- Proven experience in reviewing shop drawings and building plans in an engineering, architectural, or construction environment.
- Excellent understanding of construction practices, materials, and the Ontario Building Code (OBC).
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings.
- Familiarity with relevant software and tools for drawing review and markups.
- Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes in construction projects.
- Proficiency in CAD software (i.e. AutoCAD), with proven experience in utilizing software to create technical drawings and models in an engineering or architectural environment.
- Familiarity with structural engineering principles and calculations is a bonus.
- WSIB insurance (independent contractor)
Qualifications:
- Has or is working towards a degree in Structural Engineering from an accredited Canadian institution
- Work experience is not mandatory but is considered an asset.
- EIT or similar status, must be eligible to apply for P. Eng status under the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
