Job Summary:
The Yard & Logistics Lead Hand is responsible for leading daily yard and logistics operations through the coordination of shipping, receiving, material handling, and yard activities. As a working lead hand, this role provides guidance to employees, promotes a safe and organized work environment, and ensures materials and products are moved accurately and efficiently to support operational and customer requirements. This position is also responsible for completing required paperwork, maintaining records, and using computer systems to support logistics and yard activities.
Responsibilities
- Support daily yard and logistics operations by coordinating workflow priorities, material movement, and team activities.
- Provide hands-on leadership to team members, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard. Act as the communication link between team members and management.
- Plan and coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments, including transportation scheduling and required documentation.
- Maintain accurate shipment and delivery records in internal systems (e.g. SAP, Excel, Job Boss).
- Organize yard layout and oversee material flow to ensure efficient storage, accessibility, and movement between departments.
- Coordinate order picking, staging, and timely delivery of materials to support operational needs.
- Support and oversee safe loading/unloading of materials and lead by example in the operation of equipment (e.g., forklifts, telehandlers, rigging systems).
- Ensure equipment inspections are completed, monitor usage and maintenance, and report or coordinate repairs for any defects or safety concerns.
- Support inventory control, including tracking, organization, and accuracy of materials and yard stock.
- Maintain accountability for tools and equipment, ensuring proper use and condition.
- Train and support onboarding of employees, reinforcing safe work practices and company Health & Safety policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment through regular housekeeping and safety checks.
- Support workflow planning, continuous improvement initiatives, and provide input on team performance.
- Other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Basic computer skills and experience with operational systems (e.g. SAP, Excel, Job Boss).
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to lead, train, and support team members while remaining hands-on.
- Experience in a yard, logistics, or material handling environment; leadership experience is an asset.
- Experience operating material handling equipment (e.g. forklifts, telehandlers) rigging knowledge preferred.
- Valid safety certifications as required (e.g., WHMIS, Fall Arrest, First Aid, equipment certifications).
- Strong understanding of workplace safety standards and PPE compliance.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract (if required).
- Reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing demanding tasks (standing, bending, repetitive work).
