Position Title

Applied Research Technician IV (Electrical and Controls Coop Student) Term-Certain

Position Summary

Are you an Engineering student who is looking for a hands-on opportunity this Fall in your field of study? Are you interested in real world experience that you will not get anywhere else?

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative student for a coop position. As a coop student, you will have the opportunity to work closely with experts at EIC on various projects aimed at pushing the boundaries of innovation in renewable energy systems.

The Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) focuses on alternative and renewable energy systems and houses Red Deer Polytechnic’s Alternative Energy Lab. The EIC focuses on finding sustainable ways to generate energy and provides innovative solutions that influence the future of the energy in Alberta and Canada. Data analysis of the solar photovoltaic systems, alternative energy in agriculture, power and renewable energy systems simulation are among the projects EIC is currently involved in. The team assists in applied research for industry while providing our students with meaningful, practical opportunities to further their learning.

Students in EIC are passionate about innovation and excited to learn in a unique environment. They are comfortable with work that is ambiguous and ever-changing. They will offer ideas and suggestions to their leaders and are prepared for those ideas to become learning challenges.

Position Responsibilities

Assist in the design, analysis, and optimization of electrical, electronic, and control systems for energy and automation applications.
Support the development, integration, and testing of research prototypes, including embedded systems and automated platforms, through hands-on work with lab equipment and workshops
Contribute to BMS programming, PLC programming and firmware development using NVDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi and similar hardware platforms.
Assist with electrical system integration tasks including interpretation of electrical schematics, basic wiring, soldering, and troubleshooting hardware.
Conduct experimental testing, data collection, and technical reporting to support engineering analysis and applied research decision making.
Collaborate with researchers, engineers, technologists, and students on multidisciplinary applied research projects
Actively participate in team meetings, project reviews, brainstorming sessions, and technical activities.

Required Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Engineering program relevant to electrical engineering, electronics, control systems, automation, or a closely related discipline, aligned with the position’s responsibilities.
Proven strong work ethic, attendance record and productivity in an independent work environment demonstrated through previous employment, education, or volunteer experience.
Proven ability to work within a team and communicate positively supporting new and different ideas
Ability to complete work duties such as sitting, standing, and/ light physical effort over modest periods of time, with some opportunity for relief and task variety. The work may involve movement of average weight material with periodic requirements to lift heavier objects.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge or hands-on experience in two or more of the following areas:
- Firmware or embedded software development using C, C++, and/or Python
- Experience with ESP32, Arduino, and/or Raspberry Pi platforms
- Exposure to PLC programming, including ladder logic
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics
- Experience with PCB design / CAD software
- Practical laboratory skills including use of multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and soldering equipment
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
Passion for innovation and eagerness to learn about emerging technologies in manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory
holidays and benefits.
