About the Company
Hermont Group operates Hermont Fleet, a fleet management SaaS platform serving Amazon DSP (Delivery Service Partner) operations across Canada and the United States. Our platform integrates directly with Amazon's Relay Garage API and Data reporting systems, managing the full repair order lifecycle: work order intake, line item status orchestration, vendor coordination, invoicing, and compliance reporting. We began by serving a single Amazon delivery station in British Columbia and now support Amazon fleet operations across the province, with an active expansion into the United States market. We are a small team of roughly twenty people. Engineering decisions here are made quickly and ship directly to customers who depend on them daily.
About the Role
This is our first senior engineering hire in Canada, and it is a foundational one. Hermont Fleet is a live product with real revenue and real enterprise obligations. It has grown quickly, and the pace of that growth has outrun the technical foundation underneath it. We know this. We commissioned an independent third-party technical review specifically to understand where the gaps are before opening this role, and we will share those findings with candidates at the appropriate stage of the process.
You are being hired to own that foundation. That means architecture, data modelling, deployment infrastructure, engineering standards, and the practices the team works within. It also means doing all of that while the product keeps shipping. We are not able to stop feature development to pay down technical debt, and we are not looking for someone who expects that.
Product direction, specifications, and Amazon stakeholder relationships are owned by our Product Manager. Technical decisions are yours. This is a high-autonomy role with a short path from decision to production.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Architecture and System Design
- Own the architecture of the platform, including the database schema and core data model.
- Design scalable data models, APIs, workflows, and business logic.
- Evaluate the existing architecture, identify structural weaknesses, and produce a prioritised remediation plan with realistic sequencing against ongoing feature delivery.
- Translate product requirements into clear technical implementation plans.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, and implementation gaps early, and raise them before they reach production.
- Make build-versus-refactor decisions against a six to twelve month horizon, and be able to defend those decisions to non-technical stakeholders in business terms.
2. Engineering Standards and Code Quality
- Define and enforce pull request review standards, including review gates, module size limits, and test coverage thresholds.
- Own code review for the team. No code reaches the main branch without a second set of eyes.
- Establish and maintain coding standards, implementation patterns, and reusable structures so that new engineers adapt to an existing system rather than introducing their own.
- Refactor fragile or legacy logic where it creates operational or product risk.
- Ensure features are implemented according to the agreed technical design and acceptance criteria.
3. Infrastructure, Deployment, and Reliability
- Design and build our CI/CD pipeline, including automated test execution, build verification, deployment verification, and rollback.
- Establish error tracking and persistent observability so that production failures are diagnosable after the fact.
- Own secrets management, database access control, and application-level security practices.
- Implement product analytics sufficient to answer whether a feature is being used and how.
- Define incident response: what happens when production goes down, who is paged, and what the recovery path is.
- Support debugging and root-cause analysis for production issues.
4. API Integration and Data Flow
- Lead the technical implementation of external API integrations, primarily Amazon Relay Garage and Data reporting.
- Design and maintain inbound and outbound data flows across request intake, work order updates, status synchronisation, invoicing, and reporting structures.
- Ensure API payloads, validation rules, and data mapping logic are implemented correctly and remain compliant as partner specifications change.
- Build backend structures that satisfy enterprise partner requirements without introducing unnecessary system complexity.
5. Team Guidance and Development
- Mentor two junior developers and one mid-level developer. Raise their technical ceiling rather than only reviewing their output.
- Break down technical work into clear, executable development tasks.
- Guide developers on implementation direction and unblock them during execution.
- Build redundancy into the team so that no single person's absence stalls a domain.
- Contribute to technical hiring as the team grows.
6. Product and QA Collaboration
- Work closely with the Product Manager to assess technical feasibility and implementation approach.
- Provide technical input when product requirements need clarification or adjustment.
- Define expected system behaviour for QA and validation, and support our QA tester on edge cases, validation rules, and backend logic.
- Own release readiness from a technical perspective.
- Communicate technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical team members.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid office environment. Standard computer-based work.
- Operates in a fast-moving product environment with evolving requirements and priorities.
- Supports a live production system used daily by enterprise customers. Occasional availability outside core hours may be required during releases or production incidents.
- Occasional coordination with team members and partners across multiple time zones.
Qualifications
Tech Stack
JavaScript / TypeScript, Next.js, Supabase, PostgreSQL, AWS, Vercel
Technical Requirements
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and modern ES6+ syntax.
- Hands-on experience with Next.js in production environments. You have owned a production Next.js application, not only contributed to one.
- Experience with Supabase and AWS, including Auth, database design, Row Level Security, and backend workflow implementation.
- Strong understanding of PostgreSQL and SQL-based relational database design. You can explain why a given schema is wrong and quantify what it costs at ten times the current data volume.
- Experience deploying and maintaining applications on Vercel or comparable serverless platforms.
- Experience designing and integrating REST APIs and third-party systems.
- Demonstrable experience building or substantially owning a CI/CD pipeline in a production environment.
- Working knowledge of application security fundamentals: secrets management, access control, authentication, and transport security.
- Experience with observability tooling: error tracking, logging, and monitoring in production.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Associate's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is required.
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
- Experience serving as a Technical Lead, Senior Engineer, Lead Backend Engineer, or in a similar role.
- Deep understanding of API design, database architecture, and backend business logic.
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining production systems.
- Strong system design, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to break down complex technical initiatives into clear, executable tasks.
- Experience conducting code reviews and setting engineering quality standards for a team, not only following standards set by others.
- Demonstrable experience mentoring junior engineers.
- Experience inheriting and improving an existing codebase, including making pragmatic trade-offs between remediation and delivery.
- Ability to work effectively with changing requirements in fast-moving environments.
- Experience balancing delivery speed with long-term system maintainability.
- Strong English skills, written and verbal, with clear communication to both technical and non-technical team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on SaaS platforms.
- Experience with fleet, logistics, maintenance, vendor, marketplace, automotive, or field-service products.
- Experience with complex workflow systems involving statuses, approvals, invoicing, or reporting.
- Experience implementing third-party or enterprise API integrations, particularly where the partner controls the specification.
- Experience working closely with Product Managers and QA teams.
- Experience supporting production systems, release validation, and post-release stability.
- Experience in a startup or growth-stage company environment.
- Experience as the first or one of the first senior engineers in an organisation.
