The Lethbridge Police Service is seeking an experienced law enforcement leader to lead and oversee our Community Peace Officer (CPO) Program in the full-time permanent role of Community Peace Officer Sergeant. Reporting to the Field Operations Support Section Staff Sergeant, the CPO Sergeant is responsible for the leadership and administration of the Community Peace Officer Unit, ensuring compliance with provincial legislation, appointment requirements, organizational policies, and professional standards.
The CPO Sergeant provides direct supervision and leadership to Community Peace Officers, overseeing operational planning, frontline enforcement activities, recruitment, training, performance management, and community engagement initiatives. This position plays a key role in promoting public safety, fostering positive community relationships, and advancing the priorities of the Lethbridge Police Service.
This permanent full-time position falls under the protection of a collective agreement associated to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 70 contract. CUPE Local 70 represents employees employed in number of civic departments within the City of Lethbridge.
As the CPO Sergeant, you will:
- Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring, coaching, and performance management for Community Peace Officers
- Ensure Community Peace Officers operate within the scope of their Provincially authorized authorities and legislative mandates.
- Review and approve investigative reports, occurrence files, court briefs, and enforcement documentation
- Coordinate the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and development of Community Peace Officers and CPO Cadets.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver training programs for new and existing Community Peace Officers.
- Complete employee scheduling, payroll approvals, performance evaluations, attendance management, and workforce planning.
- Manage the Community Peace Officer Program budget and related administrative functions.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services reporting requirements, including statistical reporting, operational reporting, and provincially mandated annual reports.
- Oversee the operation of the Judicial Interim Release (JIR) Office and support the operation of the Short-Term Holding Facility.
- Investigate complaints and disputes and take appropriate action to provide assistance and enforce applicable legislation within Community Peace Officer authorities
- Prepare investigative reports, legal documents, court information, and provide testimony in court as required
- Foster collaborative relationships with community stakeholders, businesses, partner agencies, and government representatives
- Support and oversee community engagement initiatives, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
- Provide leadership and operational direction during critical incidents, major events, and emergencies involving Community Peace Officers
- Participate in policy development, continuous improvement initiatives, and strategic planning related to the Community Peace Officer Program.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Field Operations Support Section Staff Sergeant
The successful applicant for this position will have:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Community Peace Officer or in a role directly related to law enforcement such as conservation, bylaw, Sheriff, Police Officer, etc.
- Community Peace Officer Induction Program Training (CPOIP) or approved equivalent training
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role is strongly preferred.
- Proven leadership, coaching, mentorship, employee development, and conflict resolution skills are considered essential for this position as are strong interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy with a strong emphasis on customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement and make effective decisions in dynamic operational environments
- Strong organizational, administrative, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to successfully manage competing priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and accountability
- A valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers Licence (Non-GDL)
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification
- The ability to meet all eligibility requirements necessary to obtain and maintain a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment in Alberta
- Baton, OC/Pepper Spray Training/Certification
- EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) and RADAR/LIDAR training is required
- Proficient Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
Possessing the following training or credentials would be considered an asset:
- Currently possess an Alberta CPO Level 1 Appointment
- Criminal Justice diploma or related post-secondary education
- Commercial Vehicle Weight Enforcement training
- Incident Command System (ICS) training and certification
- Experience and knowledge using Niche RMS/Niche UA
Condition of Employment
Any offer of employment will be conditional upon the successful candidate meeting all mandatory qualifications and requirements necessary to obtain and maintain a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment in Alberta. This includes but is not limited to:
- Successful completion of the Alberta Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP), or eligibility to obtain an exemption based on recognized and approved prior law enforcement experience.
- Meeting all requirements established by Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services for a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment
- Successfully obtaining a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment through the Province of Alberta
- Successful completion of an approved Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) test within six (6) months of the Community Peace Officer appointment application, with a passing time of 4 minutes and 45 seconds or better
- Maintaining all certifications, qualifications, and standards required to hold a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment
- Candidates must have no criminal record (except where a pardon or record suspension has been granted), no outstanding criminal charges, and must not be the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.
The successful candidate is required to consent to a police security clearance, which includes the voluntary completion and submission of a personal disclosure form (lifestyle questionnaire), criminal and police records check, reference checks and truth verification through polygraph examination.
Wage: $53.91 per hour |2026 Rate.
Hours: Shift Work (Morning and Afternoon Shifts Monday to Friday)
Average of 40 hours per week (Flexible/Compressed Work Week is available)
Shift adjustments for evening/weekend work will be required as the position responsibilities dictate

Our police service dogs have minimal interaction with employees on site under the supervision of a trained handler.
