The Opportunity
McElhanney Ltd. is seeking an experienced and solution-oriented GIS Specialist to join our Digital Technology Leadership Team for GIS and FME Technology in Calgary AB. in a hybrid work environment role. This is a rewarding opportunity for a self-guided professional with a passion for innovation and digital transformation in geospatial technologies.
At McElhanney, our DTL team support geographically dispersed teams as they leverage advanced technologies - including drones, LiDAR, and real-time sensor networks - to capture and integrate geospatial data from land, air, and water. Using industry-leading platforms like ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise and FME Flow, we transform raw spatial information into actionable insights through 3D modeling, geodatabase management, field mapping and interactive web mapping. We focus on platform service delivery through web enabled data and applications. We provide the data, mapping and automation backbone to support McElhanney’s wide variety of surveying, engineering, design and consulting projects. By collaborating closely with clients, we deliver custom GIS solutions that go beyond traditional mapping- empowering communities with dynamic, accessible, and comprehensive geospatial intelligence.
What You’ll Do
- Support back end geodatabase and server operations for business and project automation related to GIS and FME technology.
- Support, develop and administer data automations and data archiving processes using FME Flow.
- Support and deliver advanced GIS mapping and analysis projects across multiple branches in Western Canada, leveraging your expertise in the ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise environment to publish, deploy, and steward digital GIS solutions.
- Architect, integrate, and optimize complex geospatial datasets using industry-leading platforms (ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, FME, and related technologies).
- Design and implement interactive web maps, dashboards, and mobile applications that empower clients and internal teams with actionable geospatial intelligence.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of GIS methodologies, standards, and best practices within the organization.
- Engage directly with clients to understand their needs, propose tailored solutions, and ensure the successful delivery of high-impact GIS projects.
What You’ll Bring
- Advanced Diploma in GIS or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in GIS analysis, solution deployment, and project deliverables.
- Advanced proficiency with GIS, analysis and database systems (ESRI ArcGIS, Safe Software FME, MS SQL Server) for publishing, sharing, and maintaining digital GIS solutions.
- Familiarity with web APIs for GIS integrations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong skills in geodatabase design, spatial analysis, web mapping, and best practices for publishing to Portal for ArcGIS.
- Demonstrated expertise in automating GIS workflows and leveraging FME Flow to streamline data integration, transformation, and analysis. Proven track record of developing innovative GIS applications and workflows for diverse sectors (e.g., infrastructure, environment, utilities).
- Leverage foundational coding and scripting skills (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Arcade, Python/ArcPy) to enhance GIS sites and applications by integrating custom code and expressions to deliver more dynamic, user-focused solutions across the platform.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid, unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license.
What Can We Offer You?
The salary range for this position is $73,000 - $93,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
