A fundamental expectation of this position is that engineers and technologists learn how to operate and optimize the machinery they design. You will work closely with machinists, welders, fabricators, assemblers, electricians, automation specialists, and production personnel to deliver practical, innovative, and reliable equipment solutions.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys taking ownership of projects from concept through fabrication, assembly, startup, testing, optimization, and ongoing production support.
Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Design & Equipment Development
- Design custom machinery, tooling, fixtures, production equipment, and automation systems.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, layouts, and manufacturing drawings.
- Perform mechanical calculations, stress analysis, and design validation.
- Develop innovative solutions that improve safety, productivity, quality, and efficiency.
- Support projects from concept development through fabrication, assembly, commissioning, and production implementation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet manufacturing and operational requirements.
Manufacturing & Production Support
- Work directly with machinists, welders, fabricators, assemblers, electricians, and automation personnel.
- Support fabrication, assembly, installation, and commissioning activities.

- Troubleshoot mechanical and manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions.
- Provide technical support to production and maintenance personnel.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment reliability, safety, and performance.
Automation & Systems Integration
- Integrate mechanical systems with sensors, actuators, motors, drives, pneumatic systems, controls, and automation components.
- Collaborate with electrical and automation teams during machine development and commissioning.
- Support startup, debugging, testing, and optimization of automated equipment.
- Assist with system troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
Research & Development
- Develop prototypes, proof-of-concept systems, and custom machinery.
- Plan and execute machine trials and performance testing.
- Collect and analyze performance data.
- Evaluate results and implement design improvements.
- Support innovation, new product development, and process improvement initiatives.
- Research emerging technologies and manufacturing methods.
Machine Operation & Testing
- Learn, operate, test, troubleshoot, and optimize the equipment you design.
- Evaluate machine reliability, usability, throughput, cycle times, and overall performance.
- Work directly with machine operators to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Apply operational experience to future machine and equipment designs.
- Develop practical solutions based on real-world production feedback.
Required Skills
- Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation or eligibility for CET certification.
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of machine design, equipment development, or industrial machinery experience.
- Strong knowledge of metal fabrication, welding, machining, metal forming, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience integrating mechanical systems with automation, controls, sensors, actuators, motors, drives, and electronic components.
- Experience performing mechanical calculations, stress analysis, and design validation.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, assembly design, and engineering drawing creation.
