About this role
An air cooler isn't one piece of equipment. It's a heat exchanger, a steel structure, a rotating equipment package and an electrical package - built to one specification, issued on one drawing set, and inspected against one plan. This role owns that whole picture.
We're hiring a Project Engineer dedicated to our air cooler product line. Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, you are the technical liaison between the front end of the business and Quality and Manufacturing.
Air coolers are multi-discipline by nature, and this role is scoped to match. Alongside the heat transfer scope, you'll work across steel structure design and detailing, motors, actuators, vibration and temperature instrumentation, and electrical works, the packages that make an air cooler a functioning unit.
Client contracts and specifications come to you; you turn them into something the shop can build to. That means specification summaries and a technical risk register up front, engineering notes on the drawings that carry the contract requirements a drawing alone can't express, and an Inspection and Test Plan that Quality Control, Production and Testing can all work from without interpreting it three different ways.
You'll sit in squad checks before packages go out for client review. You'll write the clarifications when comments come back. And when a quality issue surfaces mid-project, you're in the root cause conversation, not hearing about it afterwards.
This is a role for someone who reads a specification closely, writes clearly, and would rather catch the conflict at review than at fabrication.
What you'll do
▸ Review client contracts and specifications, produce clear summaries, and prepare the technical risk register
▸ Build and maintain a repository of client specification summaries so the next project starts from what the last one learned
▸ Compose detailed engineering notes for drawings, capturing contract requirements the drawing package doesn't otherwise express
▸ Create the Inspection and Test Plan using a consistent, repeatable methodology — aligned to the customer specification and to the needs of EIL Quality Control, Production and Testing
▸ Identify the non-destructive examination and other quality-related procedures required by code and customer specification
▸ Review ITPs, 3D models, drawings and thermal, mechanical, structural and miscellaneous engineering calculations, and take part in squad checks before packages are issued for client review
▸ Review engineering and drawing packages against production capability and standard practice
▸ Act as the technical resource to the Project Manager in internal and client kick-off meetings
▸ Prepare clarifications and responses to customer queries (including client feedback on drawings, ITPs, NDE and WPS) and support MTR, documentation and material-related questions
▸ Support root cause analysis and resolution of quality issues at any stage of the project
▸ Contribute to bid-stage specification reviews, help build EIL's standard procedures and process flow, support field services on site visits, and prepare equipment registration applications for Canadian provincial authorities and the National Board
What you bring
▸ An engineering degree in Mechanical or Civil-Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
▸ Five or more years of relevant technical experience in an industrial manufacturing environment - air cooler structures, process equipment, heat exchangers and related piping
▸ Demonstrated knowledge of the standards this equipment is built to: API-661 and API-660, TEMA and ASME BPV, the structural codes behind the supporting steel (CISC, AISC, NBC and CSA and NACE where the service demands it)
▸ Working knowledge of manufacturing processes (steel structure fabrication, heat transfer, pressure testing, x-ray and weld examination) plus QA/QC and NDE for carbon steel, stainless steel and other exotic materials
▸ Multi-discipline engineering exposure across the packages an air cooler brings together: steel structure design and detailing, motors, actuators, vibration and temperature instruments, and electrical works
▸ Proven organizational skills, multiple deadlines and competing tasks in a high-pressure environment
▸ The ability to work effectively within a team and to carry projects independently
▸ A valid Class 5 driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle for local and Alberta job site visits
Work environment and travel
This role is based in an office environment, with regular time in a heavy industrial fabrication shop where PPE is required. You can expect to be standing, walking, sitting, climbing and descending stairs, and bending on a regular basis.
Travel to job sites or subcontractor facilities is required as projects demand, and international travel may come up from time to time.
