About the Lab and Programming Manager, Bioscience Role:
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Emergency and Specialized Care, the Lab and Programming Manager, Bioscience provides operational leadership and supervision for Bioscience laboratory services and supports the planning, coordination, and continuous improvement of laboratory operations across the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences. The role is responsible for establishing and leading the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences Laboratory Operations Community of Practice, fostering collaboration, innovation, operational consistency, and continuous improvement across laboratory-based programs. Working in partnership with laboratory staff, faculty, and academic leaders, the incumbent will develop a sustainable framework that supports the sharing of best practices, standardized operational processes, and future collaboration across Faculty laboratory services.
Laboratory Operations & Academic Support
- Establish, lead, and continuously develop the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences Laboratory Operations Community of Practice.
- Develop a collaborative framework that promotes knowledge sharing, professional development, and operational excellence among Bioscience Specialists, Bioscience Technologists, and other laboratory professionals.
- Lead the development and adoption of standardized laboratory operational processes, documentation, scheduling practices, and resource stewardship across the Faculty.
- Foster collaboration and identify opportunities for shared resources, operational efficiencies, and continuous improvement across laboratory-based programs.
- Work collaboratively with the Faculty Lead, Anatomical Donation and Education to ensure the operational management of anatomy laboratories supports the academic, ethical, and regulatory requirements associated with anatomical donation and cadaver-based education.
- Recommend future opportunities to expand and strengthen collaboration among laboratory-based programs as the Faculty's laboratory operations continue to evolve.
Laboratory Leadership
- Provide operational leadership, supervision, coaching, mentoring, and performance support to the Bioscience Specialist and Bioscience Technologist teams.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee staffing, workload allocation, scheduling, onboarding, orientation, and professional development to ensure effective laboratory operations and service delivery.
- Provide guidance, performance feedback, and operational direction to laboratory staff, supporting a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment.
- Promote a culture of safety, service excellence, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement across Bioscience laboratory operations.
Laboratory Operations & Development
- Lead the operational planning, coordination, and continuous improvement of Bioscience laboratories.
- Coordinate laboratory scheduling, operational programming, equipment utilization, inventory management, procurement recommendations, maintenance, and laboratory readiness.
- Provide advanced technical leadership in anatomy laboratory operations, including cadaver dissection, anatomical specimen preparation, preservation, and ethical donor stewardship, as operationally required.
- Develop and implement SOPs, operational processes, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, biosafety standards, institutional policies, and laboratory operational requirements.
- Support planning for new laboratories, renovations, capital equipment acquisitions, and future laboratory development.
Faculty Laboratory Operations Community of Practice
- Lead and further develop the Faculty Laboratory Operations Community of Practice.
- Promote standardized operational practices, documentation, scheduling processes, and resource stewardship.
- Foster collaboration among Bioscience Specialists, Bioscience Technologists, and other laboratory professionals.
- Collaborate with the Faculty Lead, Anatomical Donation and Education to support the academic, ethical, and regulatory requirements of anatomy laboratories.
- Identify opportunities for shared resources, operational efficiencies, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
- Foster innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across Bioscience laboratory services.
- Participate in strategic planning, laboratory development, equipment replacement planning, and Faculty initiatives.
- Monitor emerging technologies, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Lead special projects and initiatives supporting Faculty and institutional priorities.

Education
- Master's degree in Human Anatomy, Anatomical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Laboratory Sciences, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible leadership experience may be considered.
Experience and Skills
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in laboratory operations, laboratory management, anatomy laboratories, technical services, or a related health sciences environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in human cadaver dissection, prosection, anatomical specimen preparation, preservation, storage, tracking, and ethical donor stewardship, in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations, and institutional requirements.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating laboratory operations, staffing, scheduling, equipment management, inventory systems, operational planning, and resource stewardship.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, coaching, developing, and evaluating technical staff in a collaborative, team-based environment.
- Knowledge of laboratory health and safety practices, biosafety principles, occupational health and safety legislation, infection prevention and control, hazardous materials management, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating standard operating procedures (SOPs), operational processes, quality assurance measures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience supporting laboratory budget planning, procurement recommendations, purchasing, equipment lifecycle management, inventory stewardship, and capital equipment planning.
- Strong project management, organizational, communication, stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to innovation, operational excellence, continuous improvement, and service-oriented leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting post-secondary laboratory-based education, including anatomy and physiology instruction.
- Experience establishing, leading, or facilitating laboratory operational communities of practice, cross-functional working groups, or collaborative operational initiatives.
- Experience leading operational change, strategic laboratory development, and process improvement within a complex organization.
- Experience with simulation technologies, 3D anatomical models, digital learning resources, or other innovative laboratory teaching tools.
- Current certification in WHMIS, Standard First Aid, and CPR is considered an asset.
