AFD Petroleum Ltd. | Edmonton, AB (hybrid) | Full-time, permanent | Intermediate to Senior
About the team
AFD Petroleum is a fuel distribution company operating across Western and Northern Canada (cardlock, bulk, lubricants, transport). The Digital Solutions, Analytics & IT group is a small team that builds and runs the company's data platform and internal software. This includes a Microsoft Fabric lakehouse and warehouse environment, the AFD Suite (a set of web-based analytics and operations hubs), Dynamics 365 Business Central customizations, and production ML models for churn scoring, anomaly detection, and lead scoring. We use leading development tools heavily and work directly with executives and branch operations.
The role
You will be the team's dedicated software developer. You will own the application and automation layer: the FastAPI applications behind the AFD Suite, customer and driver portals, third-party integrations, and Business Central process automation. You take projects from requirements through deployment on Azure and support them in production. The team is small, so you own your projects end to end.
What you'll own
AFD Suite platform: the FastAPI and SPA applications that serve as departmental analytics hubs (Sales, Supply, Transport), including caching, auth, CI/CD, and production support.
-
Portals and internal tools: customer portal for account and invoice access, pricing tools and alerts, allocation and order portals, driver-facing web clients.
-
Business Central automation: AL extensions, job queue automation, invoicing and billing modules (cardlock direct invoicing, consolidated billing), posting and G/L mapping logic, working closely with finance.
-
Integrations: REST/API integrations with fleet and fuel card providers, shop management, POS, telematics, and the Fabric data platform.
What you'll do
Design, build, ship, and support production web applications (Python/FastAPI backends, JavaScript/TypeScript front ends) on using AWS & Azure.
-
Write and tune SQL against Fabric warehouse star schemas, and contribute to dbt/DLT pipeline work as we migrate off legacy data models.
-
Develop and maintain Business Central AL extensions and automations. Prior AL experience helps but is not required if you can pick up an ERP extension model quickly.
-
Build integrations with third-party APIs and handle auth, retries, idempotency, and monitoring properly.
-
Keep secrets out of code and images (Key Vault and managed identity), script your deployments, and document your systems.
-
Work directly with finance, transport, supply, and sales to scope and deliver.
Must-haves
-
4+ years (intermediate) or 7+ years (senior) building and running production web applications.
-
Strong Python (FastAPI, Flask, or Django) and solid front-end JavaScript/TypeScript.
-
Strong SQL, including analytical queries against star-schema warehouses.
Azure experience, or equivalent cloud experience with the ability to get deep on Azure or AWS quickly: containerized deployment, secrets management, CI/CD.
-
Experience integrating third-party REST APIs, including auth and failure handling.
-
A track record of owning projects end to end with minimal supervision.
-
Comfortable and productive with AI-assisted development tools, with good judgment about their limits.
Nice to have
-
Dynamics 365 Business Central or NAV development (AL, extensions, job queues, API pages). This is the biggest differentiator for us.
-
Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, or Databricks; dbt or DLT.
-
Power BI (semantic models, DAX).
-
Experience shipping ML model outputs into applications.
-
Background in fuel distribution, logistics, energy, or another industrial sector.
How we work
-
Small team reporting to the Director of Digital Solutions, Analytics & IT, with direct access to executives and branch operations.
-
AI-assisted development is standard on this team.
-
Fulltime based in Edmonton's main office.
-
Some production support is expected, since these applications run invoicing and pricing workflows for the business.
