Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Flight Medic (CFM) the Assistant Chief Flight Medic / RN, plays a critical role in developing clinical training and providing supervisory leadership within medical operations. This position is responsible for advancing education programs, ensuring clinical excellence, and guiding medical personnel in best practices. In addition to overseeing training, quality assurance, and maintaining regulatory compliance, the Assistant Chief Flight Medic / RN serves as a mentor and leader, fostering professional growth and operational efficiency. While patient transport may be part of the role, the primary focus is on strengthening clinical training and leadership within the team.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Training & Education:
- Lead the development and execution of comprehensive training programs for new and existing flight staff.
- Conduct skills assessments, simulations, and continuing education sessions to enhance clinical proficiency.
- Ensure adherence to industry best practices, provincial regulations, and company standards in all medical training programs.
- Act as a mentor and clinical resource to medical staff, fostering continuous professional development and maintaining high competency levels.
- Collaborate with the CFM and Medical Director to update clinical protocols, implement new treatment guidelines, and integrate evidence-based practices into air medical care.
Operational & Leadership Duties:
- Support daily medical team operations, ensuring efficient workflows and optimal patient care delivery.
- Assist the Chief Flight Medic in strategic planning, personnel development, and performance evaluations.
- Act as a liaison between field staff, management, and medical leadership, advocating for continuous clinical improvement.
- Ensure compliance with Transport Canada regulations, provincial and national EMS guidelines, and organizational safety policies.
- Lead and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement (QA/QI) initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- Certified Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or Registered Nurse (RN) with relevant critical care experience.
- Licensed or ability to license with The College of Paramedics of Manitoba or The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an ACP or RN in a high acuity setting.
- Residency in Winnipeg or surrounding area (or willingness to relocate prior to employment start date).
- Certifications in ACLS, PALS, BLS, ITLS / PHTLS.
- Instructor certifications or be willing to obtain in BLS, ACLS, PALS, ITLS / PHTLS.
- Proven leadership and training expertise, with a strong ability to mentor and develop clinical teams.
- Experience in quality assurance, compliance, and operational management within an EMS or air medical environment.
- Experience working in aeromedical transport (considered an asset)
- Strong documentation and report-writing skills for compliance and performance tracking.
Preferred:
- Instructor certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, ITLS, or PHTLS. (Considered an asset)
- Experience in designing and implementing EMS training programs.
- Strong understanding of Transport Canada and provincial air medical transport regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-pressure situations, problem-solve effectively, and lead in crisis scenarios.
- Experience with electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) and quality improvement analytics.
- Knowledge of aviation safety, crew resource management (CRM), and flight physiology.
