The AESO is the sole provider of system access service on the Alberta transmission system, and the Customer Grid Access team is responsible for fulfilling this part of the AESOs mandate.
The Customer Access Study (CAS) team performs and reviews project interconnection engineering studies and works closely with other AESO departments to deliver customer projects in accordance with the AESO Connection Process. The team partners with AESO project managers who are accountable for project decision-making and delivery. Customer projects are processed in batches and studied in the form of Cluster Studies.
Reporting to the Manager, Customer Access Studies, the Engineer, Customer Access Studies will work closely with the CAS Lead or Senior Engineer in the Cluster team to support delivery of assigned projects and prioritize daily project workload. You will be accountable to run interconnection engineering studies and prepare engineering solutions to project challenges, including technical decision-making for assigned projects, engineering assessments, documentation, and technical regulatory support to facilitate System Access Service Requests to the AIES. This includes producing technical activities and deliverables such as study scopes, performing engineering studies, preparing engineering study reports, and reviewing external consultant engineering assessments as required, while coordinating with and seeking guidance from the Lead Engineer regarding regional details applicable to projects.
In this role, you will also provide guidance and support to Engineers-in-Training and work cross-functionally with AESO business units, including forecasting, system planning, system operations, engineering, regulatory, legal, and tariff, in support of technical decision-making. You will also work externally with Transmission Facility Owners, Distribution Facility Owners, generator developers, large load transmission-connected customers, and consultants on behalf of the Project Manager to support delivery of assigned projects.

Conduct power flow, stability, short circuit, and advanced power system analysis studies for project interconnection using PSS/E software
Determine options or alternative solutions for connecting Market Participants to the Alberta transmission network and justify the selection of the preferred alternative based on technical, economic, and impact factors; prepare and review Single Line diagrams and documentation for connection alternative selection
Analyze system constraints identified in engineering studies and work with AESO internal Operations, Planning, Markets, and Project Engineering groups to determine Remedial Action Schemes or mitigation plans within a connection project
Proven ability to apply engineering knowledge and tools while considering environmental, societal, economic, and public safety impacts.
