Job Summary:
We currently have an open position for a Lead Operator to join our team on the afternoon shift (4:00 pm – 1:00 am). This role is responsible for both building batches correctly and executing the milling process. This role owns the full batch lifecycle, from raw material charging through milling and transfer and is accountable for quality, efficiency, and safe execution.
Key Responsibilities:
Batch Manufacturing & Process Execution
- Execute full batch production from start to finish
- Review batch sheets and formulations
- Weigh, verify, and stage raw materials
- Charge ingredients in correct sequence
- Manage addition of liquids (water, solvents, surfactants) and powders (actives, clays, dispersants)
- Control critical batching steps, including powder incorporation (avoid lumping/ fisheyes), wet-out and dispersion quality, viscosity development prior to milling
- Ensure proper order of addition to prevent incompatibility, foam issues agglomeration
- Own the quality of the batch before it reaches the mill
Dispersion & Milling Operations
- Operate and optimize high-shear mixers (cowles/rotor-stator) and horizontal media mills (disc, pin, or peg type)
- Control feed rates, pressures, and recirculation
- Control cooling/temperature limits and energy input vs particle size reduction
- Achieve required particle size (d50/d90) and product stability and consistency
Process Control & Troubleshooting
- Monitor performance of mills, pumps, tanks, and cooling systems
- Identify and correct overheating, poor grind efficiency and flow restrictions or starvation
- Optimize throughput while maintaining quality
Quality Ownership
- Complete and verify in-process checks including grind checks and density/viscosity
- Visual dispersion quality
- Take immediate corrective action on off-spec conditions
Sanitation & Changeover
- Lead cleaning and flushing procedures for mills, tanks, and transfer lines
- Prevent cross-contamination
- Maintain high housekeeping standards
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce chemical handling and plant safety procedures
- Follow WHMIS, SOPs, and internal standards
- Lead response to spills or abnormal conditions
Leadership
- Direct and coordinate operators
- Assign tasks and ensure execution
- Train team on batch discipline, equipment use and troubleshooting
Process Ownership & Flexibility
- Take responsibility for process outcomes beyond shift boundaries when required
- Ensure critical operations are stable and properly handed off
- Remain engaged during long-cycle or critical batches
- Support extended hours and schedule adjustments during peak production periods
- This role requires finishing the job properly, not just finishing the shift
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- 3–7+ years in manufacturing or processing
- Strong mechanical and process troubleshooting abilities
- Experience with batch processing, liquids, and powders
- Experience with paints & coatings, inks & pigments, adhesives/sealants preferred
- Specialty chemicals or advanced materials preferred
- Experience with bead mills/media mills, high shear mixing systems, particle size reduction processes preferred
Working Conditions:
- Manual dexterity to work with associated equipment
- Overtime as required
- Able to identify any health and safety issues
- Must be flexible in working other shifts as per business needs
