Job Summary
Are you a seasoned TAB professional ready to lead projects, mentor others, and help drive performance across complex building systems? From simple heating installations to complex commercial and industrial systems, Kelvin Commissioning Engineering LTD. (KCx Engineering) is a world class provider of commissioning and TAB (Testing, Adjustment & Balancing) services. We have expert knowledge in deep carbon retrofits, energy management, instrumentation, optimization and control, and TAB. KCx Engineering is searching for an experienced TAB Technician to join our growing team.
We are seeking an experienced and technically capable Intermediate/Senior Testing, Adjustment, and Balancing (TAB) Technician to take on a lead field role within our team. In this position, you will independently plan and execute TAB scopes on commercial and institutional HVAC and mechanical systems, deliver high-quality TAB reports, mentor junior technicians, and serve as the primary technical point of contact on assigned projects. This is an opportunity to bring your expertise to a collaborative engineering firm at the forefront of building performance and commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Independently plan, manage, and execute TAB scopes on commercial and institutional HVAC and mechanical systems, including air-side and hydronic systems.
- Perform comprehensive air-side testing including supply, return, and exhaust airflow measurements at diffusers, registers, grilles, and AHU terminals using pitot tubes, flow hoods, and anemometers.
- Perform hydronic system TAB including pump and coil flow measurement, circuit balancing, and commissioning of terminal units, heat exchangers, and associated control valves.
- Interpret and apply mechanical drawings, specifications, and equipment schedules to verify design intent and identify deficiencies during field work.
- Conduct inspections of ductwork, piping systems, and mechanical equipment; identify and document deficiencies, installation issues, and performance deviations.
- Perform on-site audits of ventilation systems; assess compliance with design requirements, applicable codes, and client specifications.
- Operate, maintain, and manage calibration records for a full range of TAB instruments including flow hoods, pitot traverse kits, digital manometers, ultrasonic flow meters, clamp meters, tachometers, and hydronic balancing equipment.
- Analyse system performance data, compare results against project specifications and design requirements, and develop practical recommendations for system optimization.
- Prepare accurate, complete, and professionally presented TAB reports in accordance with ASHRAE, AABC, or NEBB standards as applicable, for review and issue by the project team.
- Provide technical support, guidance, and clear communication to clients, contractors, and project stakeholders regarding system performance and balancing findings.
- Mentor, supervise, and provide on-site direction to junior TAB technicians; review their field data, checklists, and report drafts prior to submission.
- Coordinate site access, scheduling, and sequencing of TAB activities with general contractors, mechanical trades, building operators, and commissioning engineers.
- Maintain organized and complete records of all testing activities, instrument calibration, field observations, and as-found/as-left conditions.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of TAB field experience on commercial and/or institutional HVAC projects; senior candidates with 7+ years are encouraged to apply.
- Diploma, certificate, or trade qualification in Building/Mechanical Systems Technology, HVAC, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, or equivalent technical education.
- TAB certification from a recognised body (AABC, NEBB, or TABB) is strongly preferred; candidates actively pursuing certification will be considered.
- Demonstrated proficiency with TAB instrumentation: flow hoods, pitot traverses, digital manometers, ultrasonic and differential pressure flow meters, clamp meters, and tachometers.
- Strong ability to read and apply mechanical drawings, specifications, single-line diagrams, and equipment schedules.
- Proven ability to produce accurate, detailed, and professionally formatted TAB reports for client review.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify root causes of system performance issues and recommend corrective action.
- Strong communication skills; comfortable engaging directly with clients, engineers, contractors, and building operators in a professional setting.
- Valid BC driver’s licence and reliable access to transportation; ability to travel within the Lower Mainland and BC as project requirements dictate.
- Physical ability to perform tasks involving climbing ladders, accessing rooftops, working at elevation, and manoeuvring in confined mechanical spaces.
Join our team as an Intermediate/Senior Testing, Adjustment, and Balancing Technician, and take the next step in your career with a firm that values technical depth, professional growth, and real-world impact. You will have the opportunity to lead meaningful work, develop your expertise across a broad range of building systems, and contribute to a high-performing commissioning team.
