Project Engineer / Mechanical Engineer (E4) – Hydro Generation
Location: Edmonds, BC (Hybrid – minimum 2 days per week in office)

Position Overview
BC Hydro is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer (E4) to support an increasing workload of capital projects, Operations, Maintenance and Asset (OMA) programs, and Owner's Engineer review activities within its hydroelectric generation portfolio. The successful candidate will provide engineering, design review, project support, and technical expertise related to hydroelectric generating equipment and associated mechanical systems.
This role requires a Professional Engineer with extensive experience in hydroelectric generation equipment, including turbines, generators, and governor systems. The engineer will collaborate with multiple stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective, and technically sound solutions that support BC Hydro's generation assets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide engineering services for medium-complexity hydroelectric generation projects and operational initiatives.
- Develop safe, practical, and cost-effective engineering solutions through design, analysis, technical evaluations, and problem resolution.
- Support project execution by assisting with planning, scheduling, budgeting, progress monitoring, contractor coordination, and technical reviews.
- Conduct independent engineering studies, assessments, and investigations to resolve complex technical issues.
- Review engineering deliverables, specifications, calculations, drawings, and reports to ensure compliance with applicable standards and project requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineering teams and project stakeholders.
- Participate in the development and improvement of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Support field investigations, commissioning activities, condition assessments, and site inspections as required.
- Travel to generating stations and project sites throughout British Columbia to support engineering and project activities.
Generation Mechanical Systems Experience Required
Candidates must demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following hydroelectric generation systems:
- Hydraulic turbines (Francis, Pelton, and Kaplan)
Additional Drafting and Design Responsibilities
- Create, revise, and maintain engineering drawings for generation station mechanical systems.
- Utilize Autodesk and other CADD applications to develop 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models.
- Perform drafting and design work in accordance with BC Hydro CADD standards.
- Support facility construction, equipment layouts, site preparations, and mechanical infrastructure projects.
- Maintain drawing records within computerized document management systems.
- Develop customized drawings and designs for non-standard engineering applications.
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analyses supporting design activities.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration through another Canadian jurisdiction.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong project experience involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated expertise with hydroelectric turbines, generators, and/or governor systems.
- Experience supporting capital projects, maintenance programs, or operational engineering initiatives.
- Class 5 Driver's License in good standing.
- Intermediate English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience using industry-standard engineering analysis and design software.
- Familiarity with CAD systems, drafting practices, and engineering drawing standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing CADD work within utilities, power generation, or heavy industrial environments.
- Experience supporting hydroelectric generation facilities.
- Knowledge of BC Hydro generation assets and engineering standards.
- Completion of, or progress toward, BC Hydro Electrical System introductory training.
Professional Practice Requirements
- Prior to assignment commencement, the successful candidate must possess either their own EGBC Permit to Practice or operate under their employer's Permit to Practice.
- Engineering work completed under this assignment shall comply with BC Hydro's Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management requirements.
- Registrants will be required to apply their own or their firm's Permit to Practice Number to sealed engineering work.
- BC Hydro utilizes Digital Sign and Seal technology and candidates may be required to subscribe to Notarius digital seal services.

Pay: $80.00-$108.00 per hour
