We are seeking a highly motivated Electrical Software Developer to join our growing team in Ottawa. Position Overview
As an Electrical Software Developer, you will design, develop, test, and optimize software applications that support electrical systems, controls, automation, and embedded technologies. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop scalable solutions that enhance system performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
This position is ideal for candidates who enjoy solving complex technical challenges and working on projects that bridge hardware and software technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain software applications for electrical and automation systems.
- Create and implement control algorithms for power management, monitoring, and electrical equipment operation.
- Develop embedded software and firmware for electrical devices and control systems.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers throughout product development lifecycles.
- Perform software testing, validation, debugging, and troubleshooting activities.
- Develop tools for system diagnostics, monitoring, data acquisition, and performance analysis.
- Support integration of software with PLCs, SCADA systems, HMI applications, and industrial communication protocols.
- Participate in product design reviews and contribute technical expertise during project planning.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, specifications, and user guides.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and cybersecurity best practices.
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in software development, electrical systems programming, or industrial automation.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, or Java.
- Experience with embedded systems, firmware development, or real-time control applications.
- Understanding of electrical systems, power electronics, motor controls, or industrial automation.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Preferred
- Experience with PLC programming platforms and industrial automation systems.
- Knowledge of SCADA, HMI, and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, CAN, Ethernet/IP, OPC-UA, etc.).
- Familiarity with power systems, renewable energy technologies, battery management systems, or electric vehicle technologies.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for industrial control systems.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is considered an asset.
