Job Title: Material Handler – Crane Operator (Metal Mill)

Job Summary
The material handler–crane operator is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods within a metal mill environment. This role requires strong overhead crane operation skills, attention to safety, and coordination with production teams to support continuous workflow and meet production targets.

Key Responsibilities
Material Handling & Crane Operation

Operate overhead cranes (cab or pendant-controlled) to transport steel, aluminum, dies, and other materials throughout the facility.
Load and unload materials from production lines, trucks, racks, and storage areas.
Safely rig, lift, and position loads of various sizes and weights.
Ensure proper balancing and securement of materials prior to lifting.
Maintain continuous material flow to support production operations.

Inventory & Logistics Support

Identify, track, and move materials based on production schedules and work orders.
Stage materials for upcoming jobs or die setups as required.
Assist with receiving, storing, and organizing raw materials and finished products.
Perform basic data entry or documentation related to inventory movement.

Safety & Compliance

Adhere strictly to all safety policies, procedures, and crane operating standards.
Conduct pre-operational inspections of crane equipment and rigging tools (slings, chains, hooks).
Identify hazards and stop operations if unsafe conditions exist.
Ensure proper use of PPE and maintain clear communication with ground personnel (hand signals/radios).

Equipment Inspection & Maintenance

Perform daily inspections of cranes and material handling equipment.
Report defects, malfunctions, or maintenance needs promptly.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of work and storage areas.

Team Coordination

Communicate effectively with production, setup teams, and supervisors to prioritize material movement.
Support die setup teams by transferring tooling safely and efficiently.
Work collaboratively to minimize delays and improve workflow.

Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a metal mill or heavy industrial environment.
Proven experience operating overhead cranes in a manufacturing setting.

Certifications

Valid overhead crane operator certification (required).
Rigging and hoisting certification (strongly preferred or required depending on jurisdiction).

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of load charts, rigging techniques, and material handling best practices.
Ability to read work orders, tags, and basic production documentation.
Familiarity with metal mill processes is an asset.

Soft Skills

High attention to detail and safety awareness.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
Good judgment and situational awareness.

Work Conditions

Industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to high noise levels, heat, and heavy machinery.
Requires standing, walking, and manual handling of rigging equipment.
Working at heights (crane cab) may be required.
Shift work (days, afternoons, nights, rotating) may be required.
