Emily Carr University of Art + Design is currently seeking a qualified instructor to teach ANIM 350 – Special Topics in Animation: Unreal Pipeline within the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media in the Fall 2026 semester. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

This course introduces students to the principles and workflows of lighting within Unreal Engine, with an emphasis on real-time production pipelines used in animation. Students explore the aesthetics and technical aspects of lighting through pipeline integration and performance optimization. Through hands-on projects, students apply industry best practices such as scene organization, asset integration, and collaborative pipeline strategies.

The course meets for 3 hours per week, with additional time spent for office hours, course prep and marking. The structure of each class includes presentations of material, demonstrations of techniques, reviews of work in progress, and details about assignments. Outside of class, faculty prepare lessons, evaluate the students’ work, provide feedback, answer questions and grade projects.

Course outlines and guidance from regular faculty are provided to successful candidates.

Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field
Minimum 5+ years animation industry experience.
Experience with teaching, supervising, mentoring and independent film production.
Effective communication and organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and openness to team-teaching
Fluency in contemporary Animation and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic, and technical demands of the discipline.
Ability to effectively engage students in multicultural and multilingual classrooms
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching through an awareness of inclusive, anti-racist, and decolonial pedagogies.

Demonstrated expertise in the discipline of animation in the following:

Lighting aesthetics and lighting methods and workflows in Unreal Engine.
3D asset preparation, scene building and organization for Unreal integration.
Asset integration from various softwares into Unreal.
Best practices for creating real-time lighting and rendering production pipelines.
A strong portfolio of work demonstrating creative and conceptual rigor, supported by professional experience in the field, such as contributions to media productions (in-house and released).
Evidence of scholarly, creative, or professional contributions to the field through research, publications, teaching, or innovative practices.
Familiarity with historical and contemporary Animation (general or specific).
Familiarity with contemporary animation/media methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches that integrate animation interests.
Ability to teach through multiple aspects of production.
Proficiency in relevant techniques, processes, material practices, digital tools, or specialized media.
