The Mental Health Clinician reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Supervisor of the Behavioural Unit or designate within the Social Services Child and Family Prevention Program.
The Mental Health Clinician is responsible for providing assessment, service planning and in relation to mental health issues and for providing therapeutic intervention and support to individuals, children, youth and their families.
The Mental Health Clinician shall participate in the development, delivery and evaluation of programs and activities that enhance child, youth, and family wellness, leading to a restoration of strong families.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in social work OR a Master’s degree in a related field with 5 years counselling experience working with indigenous children, adolescents and families.
- Must be a registered member with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers or a recognized professional regulatory body in a related field (e.g. College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)).
- 1 – 2 years’ experience in working with children with behaviours and their caregivers; knowledgeable of positive intervention strategies for positive parenting and positive behaviour change.
- Experience in working with high-risk families engaged in the child welfare system.
- Current certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid is considered an asset or will be willing to obtain.
- Current certification in Understanding and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (UMAB) is considered an asset or will be willing to obtain.
- Experience in collaborating with schools and other services in a multidisciplinary approach is an asset.
- Formal training in counselling theories, trauma informed care, Indigenous healing/helping methods and their practical application is considered an asset.
- Training and knowledge of evidence based mental health treatment methodologies for mental health issues and family system issues.
- Mediation, conflict resolution, crisis and de-escalation skills are an asset.
- Experience with case management and assessment skills to determine client strengths and needs is required.
- Basic computer skills knowledge of the Microsoft office suite of programs (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Teams).

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
TECHNICAL:
- Participates in the preparation of annual work plans, and program plans.
- Assists with the establishment of operational service criteria.
- Maintains up to date documentation in the required information system.
- Assesses the psycho-social needs of clients.
- Provides therapeutic and instrumental intervention to individuals, couples, and families.
- Provides educational/therapeutic groups according to assessed need.
- Continuously reassess client and group needs in relation to service plan goals, objectives and activities and recommend appropriate changes, including referrals to other services as considered appropriate.
- Acts as a resource for groups as requested.
- Provides consultations with respect to mental health issues.
- Participates in the Six Nations Community Emergency Measures Plan.
ADMINISTRATIVE:
- Completes regular administrative paperwork (I.E. Itineraries, time sheets, travel, transportation/childcare requests).
- Completes concise reports and assessments.
- Reports as required by law as determined by legislation (I.E. Child, Youth and Family Services Act and the Mental Health Act).
COMMUNICATIONS & LIAISON:
- Participate in case reviews, conferences, and weekly clinical meetings.
- Liaises with other service providers as deemed appropriate.
- Participates in the planning/facilitation of group sessions.
- Provides/delivers presentations on various psychosocial issues as requested.
OTHER RELATED DUTIES:
Any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Behavioural Unit or designate.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work involves mental stress; requires interaction with the public, subject to deadlines, interruptions, and some unscheduled hours; flexibility of working hours; ability to take direction, prioritize, and work independently.
- Work involves consultation with internal staff.
- Work involves external contact with referring agencies.
- Work involves direct client contact with some risk due to the predisposition of some clients.
- May require some travel in the community as required using own transportation.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
With the Supervisor of the Behavioural Unit
Will be accountable to the Supervisor for direction and clinical supervision regarding daily activities.
Discusses plans, prioritizes and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively; receives instruction and supervision.
With other Professionals
Collaborates with other staff/other Six Nations agencies with courtesy, cooperation and teamwork in the provision of client-based and community services. I.E. Stop Now and Plan Program, Primary Prevention Services, etc.
Participates in ongoing clinical supervision by collaborating and consulting with other mental health professionals to inform continued service provision. E. Psychiatrists, Psychologists, external agencies, etc.
Collaborates with external agencies thereby representing and promoting the Six Nations Child and Family Services Program in a courteous, positive and cooperative manner.
Provides information and assistance as required.
With the Community
Represents and promotes SNGREC and the Social Services Department and Six Nations Child and Family Services in a courteous, cooperative and professional manne

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

- Will be thoroughly familiar with the relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines.
- Will be knowledgeable with the range of methods and techniques that are employed in social work, including methods of assessment and treatment.
- Will be familiar with traditional approaches to helping.
- Aware of community diversity concerning culture, values, and customs
- Knowledgeable of the impacts of multi-generational trauma on families and the community
- Will have access to a reliable vehicle and possess a valid class “G” Ontario driver’s license.
- Will be Native in preference to other applicants.
IMPACT OF ERROR:
Errors in judgment and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, and public confusion, serious impacts on clients and staff, and legal liability to self and to Six Nations Council.
CONTROL:
Must adhere to Six Nations of the Grand River personnel policies, Six Nations of the Grand River Social Services and Six Nations of the Grand River Child and Family protocols. Personnel must also comply with any legislation, directives, standards and procedures issued by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.
