The Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) plays a critical role in the provision of safe patient care through the disinfecting, reprocessing and sterilizing of medical devices and instrumentation. The department services 30+ customers within the St. Michael’s umbrella and processes over 486,860 items annually. The 16,000 sq. ft. area consists of stations for the receipt, decontamination, reprocessing, sterilization and preparation for disbursement of medical devices and supplies. The department works closely with Infection Prevention and Control to ensure that it meets or exceeds all industry standards. The MDRD utilizes technicians that have graduated from a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing course.
As an integral member of the Hospital leadership, the primary role of the Medical Device Reprocessing Manager includes: overseeing sterilization and reprocessing activities; assuming accountability for clinical/administrative practice of the department, in a manner consistent with the SMH mission and values; maintaining responsibility for training, coaching and supervising staff; serving as a role model promoting professionalism/collaborative working relationships with all members of the patient care team in a union/non-union environment; focusing on team accountability/quality improvements to advance SMH’s vision of excellence; participating in planning and facilitating performance excellence initiatives that support the education and professional development of Perioperative Services.
Responsibilities Include:
Planning and operations responsibilities:
- Managing, motivating and providing professional leadership to multi-generational/union and non-union staff ensuring ongoing practice and development of a cohesive team;
- Implementing processes to ensure the safe, effective and efficient delivery of sterile goods to the Operating Room and numerous SMH customers; performing, planning, quality management and operational responsibilities of the Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) aligning departmental accountabilities both within the department and across the organization
- Ensuring staff have the tools, equipment and resources required to do their work;
- Participating in special projects and corporate management responsibilities that support and advance Unity Health Toronto’s goals and objectives;
- Uses the safety, outcomes, access, patient centeredness, equity and efficiency (SOAPEE) framework to develop a yearly tactical action plan, charting the course for the MDRD that aligns with program and Hospital goals;
- Advances continuously the operational efficiency of the department through continuous quality improvement opportunities (QIP);
- Sits on multiple SMH committees to participate and be at the forefront of decision making;
Human resource management responsibilities:
- Maintains accountability for the effective management of the MDRD team;
- Manages and provides direction for the Perioperative Services/MDRD teams, including, approving new hires and/or termination of staff, ensuring the delivery of quality service, etc.;
- Monitors progress towards the achievement of goals at regular intervals and takes action, as required to ensure desired outcome is attained, including using, effective change management methodologies and leadership to influence change and innovation;
- Manages and ensures staff meet and/or exceed performance expectations by establishing and maintaining a positive work environment and effective employee relations;
- Ensuring all staff are prepared to perform their duties to the highest standards by providing consistent department orientation, educating staff on policies/procedures review, legislative/regulatory requirements and continually advancing the clinical/technical skills of the team;
- Developing and maintaining a team oriented/learning environment focusing on continuous quality improvement;· Facilitating, managing and promoting student placement activities; identifying opportunities for staff participation in mentorship/preceptorship programs
Financial management responsibilities
- Prepares, monitors and/or contributes to the development of departmental budget;
- Maintaining accountability for planning, managing and approving the department’s financial resources such as the monthly financial and bi-weekly payroll reports;
- Maintains responsibility for bi-weekly payroll and approval, including having signing authority for approved amounts; prepares yearly medical device operational and capital business cases for new instruments/equipment for MDRD;
Customer service delivery responsibilities
- Develops and fosters a positive internal and external relationship with clients, stakeholders, Hospital partners, internal and external providers;
- Develops a customer service orientation within the department and ensures mechanisms are in place to measure and improve department and staff satisfaction;
- Collects and uses data to measure quality of service, customer/staff satisfaction, performance and financial outcomes as they pertain to the services provided by the department, using these outcomes to implement process improvements
Quality management/continuous improvement responsibilities
- Monitors/measures workload and performance indicators, based on acceptable standards;
- Monitors and reports on quality improvement outcomes to stakeholders on a regular basis; develops action plans to address identified issues;
- Coaches staff to ensure that continuous quality improvement initiatives are incorporated in day to day activities;
- Implements best practice, quality assurance/improvement programs, measures and reports outcomes to stakeholders;
Performs cross functional and other duties as assigned and/or requested
Qualifications:
- Diploma in health or leadership related program, required; Bachelor’s degree in any health related program, preferred
- 5-7 years of relevant management experience, required;
- Completion of a recognized MDR certification course required; OR Current Medical Device Technician certification via Canadian Standards Association for Medical Device Reprocessing, required;
- Current membership in MDRAO or CAMDR
- Knowledge and experience related of surgical processing activities and expertise in infection control/aseptic practices required; related management/leadership experience preferred; knowledge of Lean/Six Sigma an asset;
- Recognized successes in leadership, perioperative, medical device or related fields required;
- Demonstrates advanced computer skills, e.g. word processing database management;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required;
- Excellent analytic, quantitative and problem solving skills with proven ability to make and execute data driven decisions required;
- Ability to design/implement educational programs and use information management systems required;
- Ability to manage self and others in a changing dynamic operational environment required;
- Exemplary partnership, consensus building, conflict resolution and negotiation skills required;
