Job Overview
The Metallurgical Engineer / Technical Services & Lab Lead supports Thermex’s heat-treating operations through hands-on metallurgical testing, lab & spec library oversight, technical troubleshooting, process verification & optimization, customer technical support, staff training, QC oversight, new process development, & advising on equipment upgrades and procurement. This role is intended to be practical, shop-floor connected, and capable of performing lab technician, metallographer, and metallurgical engineering duties as required. The position will also train and mentor the QC Assistant/Lab Technician Trainee so routine lab, metallography, furnace compliance support, and internal QC tasks are performed reliably by trained staff. This role provides technical input and participation in the maintenance of our Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001).
Responsibilities
1. Metallurgical laboratory work and technical reporting
o Perform and oversee metallurgical sample preparation, sectioning, mounting, polishing, etching, case depth testing, hardness testing, and microstructure evaluation.
o Conduct customer-driven testing prior to job release, including interpretation of results against spec requirements. Provide for continuous improvement of lab and reporting practices, to provide concise informative reports to customers.
o Maintain proper lab practices, organization, record keeping, and safe use and maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
2. Training and development of QC Assistant / Lab Technician Trainee
o Train and mentor the QC Assistant/Lab Technician Trainee in sample preparation, metallography, case depth testing, hardness testing, documentation, customer specifications, basic metallurgy, and internal QC support.
o Build internal bench strength so routine lab and QC functions do not sit with one person indefinitely.
o Remain capable of filling the lab technician/metallographer function when needed while developing backup within the team.
3. Internal QC and furnace compliance technical support
o Provide technical oversight, review, troubleshooting, and corrective direction for internal QC and furnace compliance activities.
o Facilitate and manage a lab-based, robust, ongoing process verification program across all furnace lines and processes.
o Support TUS reviews, shim stock programs, 3-gas analysis, hardness calibration oversight, and furnace compliance program administration while training routine tasks to the QC Assistant/Lab Technician Trainee over time.
o Keep the lab tied into quality control, testing records, calibration, non-conformance review, and process control.
4. Technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis support
o Support operations with furnace, process, material response, hardness, case depth, distortion, cracking, coupon, atmosphere, fixturing, and testing issues.
o Investigate non-conforming results, help determine root cause, and present practical recommendations to the team for review and action.
o Communicate technical issues in plain language that operators, supervisors, customer service, and management can use.
o Prepare reports for customers to address technical concerns or issues with orders.
5. Process development, customer support, and technical training
o Review process masters, customer specifications, new part requirements, and technical feasibility of work.
o Support customer technical questions, visits, audits, NCRs, and corrective actions in coordination with management, sales, and customer service.
o Train operators and supervisors on practical heat-treating fundamentals, customer requirements, process controls, and why specifications matter.
o Participate in continuous improvement projects that improve job control, testing, process understanding, and shop-floor performance.
6. Quality Management System support
o Participate effectively in the maintenance of our Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001 + customer proprietary), through collaborative participation in various aspects of the system such as NCRs and CAPAs, Quality Objective development, assisting with internal auditing, preparation / updating of documents such as Internal Procedures & Work Instructions, and support during certification and customer audits.
7. Special Projects
o Propose, support and / or participate in unique projects that may arise from time to time, driven by customer requests for process changes or improvement, the emergence of new specification requirements, new technologies for adoption, and potential new sources of work.
Requirements
- Preferred B.Sc. or graduate level degree in Metallurgical Engineering / Materials Engineering. Equivalent consideration may be given to candidates with strong practical heat-treating, metallography, lab, and technical troubleshooting experience.
- Hands-on heat-treating industry experience, including furnace operation, process control, hardness testing, case depth testing, and metallurgical lab procedures.
- Well versed in ferrous metallurgy, identification of microstructures.
- Ability to interpret customer specifications, review test results, prepare technical reports, and support customer technical questions.
- Strong practical troubleshooting skills, including root cause analysis and corrective recommendations.
- Knowledge of internal QC, lab documentation, calibration requirements, furnace compliance support, process verification, and safe lab practices.
- Willingness and ability to teach, explain technical matters in plain language, and develop less experienced staff.
- Preferred technical knowledge includes familiarity with applicable customer specifications, heat-treating standards, furnace compliance requirements, calibration practices, internal QC requirements, and audit support expectations relevant to Thermex’s customer base and processes.

Pay: $75,000.00-$115,000.00 per year
