Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical, the Senior Supervisor, Mine Geotechnical, is the chief engineer responsible for managing the Mine Geotechnical program at Highland Valley Copper, the largest Canadian open pit copper mine. This includes geotechnical aspects related to the open pits and rock storage facilities design through to execution, pit expansions, slope monitoring, dewatering and depressurization activities, geotechnical investigation programs and design compliance.
To be successful, we are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience in overseeing and coordinating multiple internal resources and external contractors in projects. The candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to develop and communicate practical recommendations to mine management, mine planners and operations personnel. This role requires a motivated self-starter, who can multi-task effectively and work collaboratively with others in a technical, team-based environment. Demonstrated experience with project management and training in geotechnical engineering is required; exposure to mine planning will be considered an asset.

Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

Develop and maintain relationships with management, technical and operational staff

Supervise and provide guidance to senior and intermediate geotechnical engineers

Oversee the construction and maintenance of dewatering well installations required for the Mine Life Extension pushback

Coordinate and review work by external geotechnical consultants to ensure it is fit for purpose and meets specifications, standards, and codes

Perform regular Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) inspections

Perform regular Life of Asset, budgeting and cost reviews

Provide sound geotechnical guidance to site and various consultants for design and design implementation activities

Manage geotechnical risk and risk mitigation efforts

Communicate geotechnical risks and solutions in a safety sensitive, operational environment

Play an active role in Teck’s geotechnical community of practice through ongoing collaboration with geotechnical personnel at other Teck operations and corporate engineering group

Bachelor’s degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering

Registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) as a P. Eng.

Minimum ten (10) years mining industry experience, including geotechnical experience in an open pit environment

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite® and relevant geotechnical software, such as GeoExplorer, Vulcan, AutoCAD, Slide, Dips, Swedge, RocFall, and Phase2/RS2 an asset

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Valid driver’s license
Pay Range: CAD $138,000 - $170,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.

Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
