Payroll Team Lead
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced and collaborative Payroll Lead to play a key role in the day-to-day management of payroll operations within a dynamic and fast-paced organization. Reporting directly to the Payroll Manager, this position is responsible for supporting accurate, compliant, and efficient full-cycle payroll processing across a multi-provincial workforce.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on, experienced payroll professional who enjoys balancing operational excellence with leadership, process improvement, systems optimization, and team development. The successful candidate will also play an important role in supporting and enhancing Workday functionality while helping to mentor and guide a growing payroll team. This is a fully in-office position that thrives on collaboration, teamwork, and cross functional support.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations & Compliance

Lead and support the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of full-cycle Canadian, multi provincial payroll, including year-end activities and reporting.
- Ensure all post-payroll responsibilities are completed efficiently, including statutory remittances, third-party payments, reconciliations, journal entries, and payroll reporting.
- Monitor payroll processes to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, company policies, and internal controls.
- Support audits, compliance initiatives, and financial reporting requirements, including CSOX-related activities.
Workday & Systems Optimization

Act as a key contributor in the ongoing enhancement and optimization of Workday payroll functionality.
- Participate in the configuration and maintenance of payroll workflows, earnings codes, reporting structures, and system processes.
- Support testing protocols, process improvements, system upgrades, and implementation initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external providers to support integrations, reporting, and tenant access management.
- Identify opportunities for automation, efficiencies, and continuous process improvements.
Leadership & Team Development

Provide day-to-day guidance, mentorship, and technical support to payroll team members.
- Assist in developing team capabilities through coaching, training, knowledge sharing, and process support.
- Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented team environment focused on service excellence and accountability.
- Partner closely with the Payroll Manager on workflow planning, resource coordination, and operational priorities.
Benefits & Employee Support

Support the administration of employee group benefits, disability management, and related employee inquiries.
- Work collaboratively with HR and external benefits providers during annual renewals and ongoing program administration.
- Assist with payroll analytics, custom reporting, and ad hoc projects across departments as required.
Qualifications

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation or equivalent payroll certification required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience processing full-cycle Canadian payroll.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a senior payroll, lead, or subject matter expert capacity.
- Hands-on experience with Workday implementation, configuration, and ongoing payroll support is required.
- Strong understanding of payroll legislation, compliance requirements, and payroll best practices.
- Experience within a high-volume or complex payroll environment is preferred.
- Accounting or finance experience is considered an asset.
- Experience within the oil and gas or energy sector is considered an asset.
- Advanced analytical, reporting, and data management skills with expert-level Excel proficiency.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and payroll systems.
