Job Summary
The Office of Professional Development and Educational Scholarship (OPDES) offers a variety of academic services to meet the educational and research needs of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Services include individual, departmental, faculty-wide, and institutional consultations on all aspects of the educational process at the Faculty level, as well as providing support and leadership with curriculum and course design, assessment strategies, program evaluation, research on teaching and learning, and accreditation. The Office provides support for those wishing to develop their teaching dossiers and support faculty in the Promotion/Tenure/Renewal process. The Office will also be engaged in event planning for the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Reporting to the Senior Director, the Educational Developer develops, implements, and evaluates educational initiatives and programs that support the professional development, research, training, teaching, and learning needs of the Faculty of Health Sciences and practitioners in the community. The incumbent also participates in the direction and influencing decisions for curriculum and educational matters. Responsibilities include collaborations and consultations with academic units to develop discipline-specific programs online, blended, and face-to-face settings, the coordination and delivery of educational programs, and the promotion and implementation of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan, create, implement and evaluate strategies to further the development of the education development portfolio
- Utilize quality improvement techniques to revise and improve educational programs and curricula.
- Develop and implement undergraduate medical education and faculty development educational programs. This includes providing advice and direction for strategic project planning, program development, and communications.
- Develop and implement opportunities for interprofessional and interdisciplinary education across the FHS.
- Develop and deliver effective faculty development lectures, seminars, workshops and other teaching activities.
- Participate in knowledge translation activities, including but not limited to writing papers for publication, and presenting and local, national, and international conferences and professional meetings.
- Conduct, and advise on, educational research and other scholarship with researchers, scholars, researchers/consultants, research associates
- Maintains linkages with other educators and education developers in the Faculties at Queen’s University and external stakeholders.
- Develop and monitor evaluation approaches, instruments, analyses, and key performance indexes against objectives.
- Produce program evaluation reports for scholarly, developmental, and monitoring purposes.
- Respond dynamically to changing development requirements and initiatives.
- Provide mentorship to colleagues, faculty, and work placement students.
- Act as a contact regarding educational issues and participate as a key member on university committees related to teaching and learning.
- Act as back up and perform duties of the Senior Director as needed.
- Assesses staff training and development needs and ensures that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
- Manage educational research and development projects as assigned.
- Implement short-term and long-range strategies and education initiatives Develop resources pertaining to teaching and learning and OPDES publications. Prepare reports and schedules.
- Maintain knowledge of current educational development trends and translate that knowledge into practical educational development.
- Other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Education, or a PhD in an alternate field with commensurate experience in applied higher education, and experience and expertise in qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches.
- Significant teaching and educational development experience at the post-secondary level.
- Academic background, practical and demonstrated experience in curriculum development, review, and evaluation.
- Experience consulting with and coaching/advising post-secondary faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff in teaching and learning.
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. Proven commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity (EDII) in past work experience.
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
- Developing, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating educational programs and initiatives.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning in higher education.
- Ability to work with interprofessional and interdisciplinary teams.
- Expertise and experience in educational research, program development, and program evaluation in addition to experience in faculty development.
- Ability to collaborate with partners both within the Faculty of Health Sciences and beyond and ability to work with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate (internally and externally) proficiently, clearly, and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and accommodate shifting priorities.
- Understanding of the Queen’s and Faculty of Health Sciences community including knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Use professional judgement and personal initiative to adapt procedures as required, meeting the needs of the projects and conduct research on a fairly independent basis.
- Computer skills to aid in the coordination of research, analysis, and presentation of data.
- Demonstrate ability to support faculty members in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and engage in educational research.
- Supervisory or leadership skills in order to motivate staff and create a positive work environment.
- Plans, prioritizes, and manages the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance, and coaching. Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.

- Determine requirements for the accreditation review of programs, quality assurance process and needs of Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) educators.
- Determine needs for teaching and learning development and decide how to implement programs and services to address needs.
- Determine the most appropriate strategies to use in addressing teaching and learning related issues and concerns.
- Determine content and delivery method of OPDES programs.
- Make appropriate decisions on how to best publicize and present information about programs.
- Determine the content of OPDES resource materials, print and web based.
