Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Electrical Controls Engineer to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and commissioning of industrial control systems across a range of complex projects in sectors such as oil & gas, mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure. This role requires a technically strong individual with deep hands-on expertise in PLC programming, drive systems integration, industrial communications, and HMI development, combined with the ability to interface effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Duties
PLC Programming & Controls Development
- Design, develop, and commission PLC programs using Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, and Siemens platforms.
- Develop control narratives, functional design specifications (FDS), and detailed I/O lists to support controls system design.
- Write and maintain structured, well-documented PLC code adhering to project standards and best practices.
- Perform thorough testing and debugging of control logic prior to and during site commissioning.
Drive Systems Integration
- Configure, program, and commission AC and DC variable speed drive (VSD/VFD) systems across a variety of applications.
- Integrate drive systems with PLCs and control architectures, ensuring reliable and optimized system performance.
- Troubleshoot drive and motor control system issues and provide technical support during and after commissioning.
Industrial Communications & Networking
- Implement and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols including Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU/DP, Profibus, Profinet, and EtherNet/IP.
- Configure industrial network infrastructure including managed switches, device-level ring (DLR) topologies, and network segmentation.
- Coordinate with IT and automation teams to ensure seamless integration between control systems and plant networks.
HMI Development
- Design and develop HMI applications using Rockwell FactoryTalk View (ME and SE) and/or AVEVA InTouch.
- Develop intuitive, user-friendly operator interfaces following applicable HMI design standards and client requirements.
- Implement alarm management strategies, trending, and historical data logging within HMI environments.
FAT, Commissioning & Startup
- Develop detailed Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) plans and lead their execution with vendors and clients.
- Develop commissioning plans and execute controls system commissioning efficiently, maintaining personnel safety and design quality throughout.
- Coordinate pre-commissioning checks, loop checks, and functional testing of all instrumentation and control system components.
- Provide on-site technical support during startup and handover phases of projects.
Client Support & Communication
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills when interfacing with clients, vendors, and internal project teams.
- Provide occasional after-hours remote technical support to clients as required, ensuring timely resolution of operational issues.
- Prepare and present technical documentation including design reports, test records, and as-built documentation.
Risk Analysis & Safety (Preferred)
- Participate in HAZOP studies and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) as part of the project risk management process.
- Apply findings from risk assessments to controls system design to enhance functional safety and system reliability.
Required Qualifications
- Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada, or eligibility for licensure, is considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 6 to 8 years of hands-on experience in industrial controls and automation engineering.
- Demonstrated proficiency in PLC programming on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley platforms (preferred); experience with Schneider Electric and/or Siemens platforms is also preferred.
