Job Overview
The Pharmacy Assistant Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to students enrolled in the Pharmacy Assistant (PA) Diploma program. The instructor prepares students with the knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviours required to support pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in community and retail pharmacy settings.
The instructor plans and delivers engaging theoretical and practical instruction, facilitates simulated pharmacy learning activities, evaluates student performance, and supports students throughout classroom and practicum learning. The instructor fosters a safe, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment while ensuring all course delivery aligns with Ontario pharmacy practice standards, institutional policies, and program learning outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Course Delivery
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons aligned with the approved PA curriculum and current industry best practices.
- Facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning using a variety of instructional methods that support diverse adult learners.
- Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application through case studies, simulations, role plays, group activities, and reflective learning.
- Deliver instruction using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, culturally safe, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approaches.
- Incorporate current legislation, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends in mental health and addictions into classroom instruction.
2. Student Assessment and Support
- Evaluate student learning through assignments, quizzes, presentations, simulations, practical evaluations, and examinations.
- Provide timely, constructive, and individualized feedback to support academic achievement and professional development.
- Monitor student progress and identify learners requiring additional academic or personal support.
- Encourage critical thinking, reflective practice, ethical decision-making, and professional accountability.
3. Practical Skills Development
- Facilitate skill development through applied learning activities, counselling simulations, motivational interviewing practice, case management exercises, crisis intervention scenarios, and group facilitation activities.
- Prepare students for field placement by reinforcing professional expectations, workplace ethics, documentation standards, communication skills, and client-centred practice.
- Reinforce workplace safety standards, infection prevention practices, WHMIS requirements, and quality assurance procedures.
- Where assigned, support students during field placement through mentoring, site visits, communication with placement supervisors, and evaluation of student performance.
- Participate in practicum monitoring, site visits, student evaluations, and communication with placement partners as assigned.
4. Curriculum and Program Development
- Participate in curriculum review and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Recommend updates to course materials to reflect changes in pharmacy practice, legislation, technology, and industry standards.
- Support program accreditation, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance initiatives as required.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and institutional committees.
5. Classroom Management
· Foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
· Encourage critical thinking, professional judgment, teamwork, and effective communication.
· Serve as a positive professional role model for future Pharmacy Assistants.
· Maintain regular communication with students regarding course expectations, academic progress, and available support services.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Pharmacy, Pharmacy Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a closely related healthcare discipline.
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant pharmacy experience may be considered for selected non-regulated courses (e.g., communication, career development, computer applications).
- Minimum three (3) years of recent experience in community, retail, hospital, or institutional pharmacy practice.
- Experience with pharmacy dispensing software (e.g., Kroll, Fillware, Propel Rx, HealthWATCH, or equivalent).
- Experience in prescription processing, pharmaceutical calculations, inventory management, pharmacy operations, medication preparation, and customer service.
- Experience with pharmacy compounding, medical devices, or pharmacy workflow is considered an asset.
- Previous teaching, mentoring, staff training, or clinical instruction experience is preferred.
- Experience working collaboratively within interdisciplinary healthcare or community service teams.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Strong digital literacy and proficiency using learning management systems, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and online teaching technologies.

- Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) Standards of Practice
- NAPRA competency frameworks
- Federal and provincial pharmacy legislation
- Community pharmacy workflow and prescription processing
- Pharmacy calculations and pharmacology
- Medication safety and quality assurance
- Pharmacy software applications
- Medical terminology and anatomy
- Professional communication and patient service
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related discipline.
- Postsecondary teaching experience or experience facilitating adult education.
- Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or online teaching.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician (R.Ph.T.) or Registered Pharmacist (R.Ph.) in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists is strongly preferred.
- Experience supervising students or staff in practicum, clinical, or community settings.
Working Conditions
- Part-time position with potential evening and weekend teaching based on program schedules.
- Courses are delivered primarily online through synchronous and asynchronous learning platforms.
- Ability to conduct site visits and participate in field placement supervision, where assigned.
- Participation in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and program events as required.
