Who We Are:
Cold Bore Technology is a leading software solution in Oil & Gas completions for multiservice data integration. Cold Bore Technology has built a standard platform that will create, collect, and structure independent data sources into a format that is consumable and consistent for the end user. Our proprietary software enables competitive service companies to communicate on the same platform without compromising the integrity or confidentiality of there own data to optimize operations for the benefit of the participating E&P operator.
We work with a number of departments within our partners organizations to help solution their current data and operational issues. These issues range from efficiency gains, data pipelines, integration of custom software solutions, data storage solutions, data streaming services, data health, communication up-time, general data structure and data analysis. Our customers receive support from our multi-disciplined team on all their custom projects and their normal day to day operations.
The Cold Bore team is comprised of a very diversified group of talented individuals. Our company has talent that ranges from field data services, software developers, project managers, personnel coordinators, hardware designers, R&M techs, finance personnel and a ton of home-grown self-motivated contributors that have created an energetic and unique company. We continue to grow, not only in work volume but unique knowledge that continually expands our companies’ capabilities and opportunities for a broader spectrum data solutions company. We are a company focused on the propagation of incredible culture throughout our teams. We support our people with strong beliefs and the support of continued individual personal growth.
JOB OVERVIEW
We are looking for a Senior Integration Software Engineer to join our engineering team, helping design and build the integration layer that powers SmartPAD in the field. Our field technicians handle on-site deployment — your job is to make sure the software they deploy is bulletproof.
Working alongside a collaborative team, you will develop the protocol drivers, data pipelines, and APIs that connect SmartPAD to the wide variety of third-party equipment found across frac operations — pumping units, sensors, wireline systems, and operator platforms. Completions operations run 24/7 with tight scheduling windows — speed of deployment, reliability under harsh conditions, and the ability to rapidly iterate are the defining challenges of this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Integration Design & Development
- Collaborate with the team to design and build scalable integration software that supports rapid pad startup, teardown, and relocation — typically on a weekly cycle
- Develop protocol drivers and adapters in Rust, Python, and JavaScript for connecting SmartPAD to diverse field hardware and operator systems
- Implement communication layers across MQTT, OPC-UA, Modbus RTU/TCP, and RS-432 for sensors, PLCs, and control systems
- Contribute to REST and event-driven APIs that move completions data between field edge systems and the Cold Bore cloud platform
- Evaluate, integrate, and validate new third-party equipment from service companies — from initial device assessment through to certified field deployment
- Help build configuration and provisioning tooling that allows field techs to stand up new integrations quickly and consistently
Reliability & Observability
- Design integrations for graceful failure, automatic reconnection, and fault tolerance in environments with intermittent connectivity
- Contribute to logging and observability tooling that gives the RTOC team clear visibility into the health of active field deployments
- Analyze failure patterns escalated from RTOC and contribute systemic software fixes that improve reliability fleet-wide
- Participate in an on-call rotation as a second-level escalation resource behind the RTOC and Field Support team
Scalable Architecture
- Contribute to the architecture of edge-to-cloud data pipelines designed to handle high-frequency, sub-second telemetry across many concurrent pad deployments
- Help design and maintain data schemas that normalize data from heterogeneous field devices into consistent, forward-compatible formats
- Contribute to configuration management practices that allow deployments to be versioned, replicated, and stood up consistently across rapid pad cycles
- Design integration components as reusable, configurable modules deployable across different hardware configurations and operator environments
- Design integrations to be cloud-agnostic — portable across infrastructure providers without dependency on any specific vendor
- Collaborate with platform and product engineering teams to evolve SmartPAD's integration framework as new equipment types emerge
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Programming & Software
- Strong proficiency in Rust for building reliable, high-performance protocol drivers and systems software
- Solid Python for automation, configuration tooling, data transformation, and scripting
- Competent JavaScript/Node.js for API services, lightweight field tooling, and integration utilities
- Experience designing and building production-grade integrations — not just prototypes
- Strong Git workflow practices including branching strategies, pull requests, and peer code review
- Disciplined approach to testing — unit, integration, and protocol-level validation before software reaches field deployment
- Comfortable in Linux environments: systemd, remote device management, networking tooling, and CLI-first workflows
Industrial Protocols
- Hands-on experience with MQTT: broker configuration, QoS levels, topic architecture, and handling intermittent connectivity
- Working knowledge of OPC-UA: server/client implementation, node browsing, subscriptions, and security modes
- Practical Modbus RTU/TCP experience: reading and writing registers, handling timeouts, and working with PLC and sensor datasheets
- Familiarity with RS-432/RS-485 serial communication and common protocol-level failure modes
- Understanding of secure communications: TLS, certificate management, API authentication, and credential handling
- Ability to design bandwidth-conscious integrations resilient on cellular or satellite links typical of remote frac sites
Experience & Background
- 4+ years in software or systems integration engineering, ideally within industrial IoT, SCADA, or upstream oil and gas
- Demonstrated experience building integrations designed for rapid, repeatable deployment rather than one-off implementations
- Track record of designing for reliability where connectivity, hardware, and conditions are unpredictable
Strong written communication skills — able to produce documentation that technical operations teams can act on independently
NICE TO HAVE
- Familiarity with Sparkplug B — topic namespace conventions, birth/death certificate mechanism, and state-aware device management over MQTT
- Experience with Protocol Buffers (protobuf) or other binary serialization formats for low-bandwidth data transmission
- Familiarity with frac completions workflows, wellsite instrumentation, or upstream oil and gas operations
- Experience with Docker and containerized deployment on resource-constrained or ruggedized edge hardware; familiarity with Kubernetes at a troubleshooting level is an asset as we move toward K8s at the edge
- Exposure to time-series data systems such as InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, or OSIsoft PI
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL — querying, troubleshooting, and building integrations against existing database structures
- Experience designing data schemas that normalize heterogeneous device data into consistent, forward-compatible formats
- Experience with remote device management or OTA update systems
- CI/CD pipelines for embedded or edge software
