Role Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer is a core technical contributor on 5Blue Process Equipment Inc.’s Engineering team, responsible for the mechanical design, analysis, and technical delivery of custom processing equipment, pressure vessels, pressure piping, structural skids, rotating equipment installations, and associated mechanical systems.
This role applies rigorous mechanical engineering principles to ensure that 5Blue’s equipment is safe, code-compliant, structurally sound, and fit for purpose in Alberta’s demanding oil and gas processing environment.
While the role shares common ground with the broader Engineer position, the Mechanical Engineer role has a focused mandate on the mechanical integrity, structural design, and materials selection dimensions of 5Blue’s product offerings. The Mechanical Engineer works closely with process engineers, instrumentation, the drafting team, fabrication, and project management to deliver technically excellent mechanical solutions across a range of custom processing applications.
Specifically this role will involve the analysis of piping connected to pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, fired equipment, and other process equipment, with particular emphasis on piping flexibility, thermal expansion, sustained and occasional loads, equipment nozzle loads, piping supports, and restraint requirements.
Key Accountabilities
· Perform mechanical design and engineering calculations for pressure piping systems and piping stress analysis associated with custom-fabricated process skids and equipment packages.
· Perform piping flexibility and stress analysis for systems connected to pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, fired equipment, and other mechanical equipment.
· Develop and evaluate piping systems to ensure that stresses, displacements, support loads, and equipment nozzle loads remain within applicable code and project requirements.
· Utilize CAESAR II to model and analyze piping systems, including operating, sustained, thermal expansion, occasional, and other applicable load cases.
· Evaluate piping restraints, guides, anchors, supports, and other structural interfaces and develop engineered solutions where required to control piping stresses, movements, and loads.
· Evaluate piping loads transferred to connected equipment, including pressure vessel and heat exchanger nozzles, pumps, and other equipment connections.
· Review equipment nozzle reinforcement requirements and identify requirements associated with piping loads, nozzle loads, and local stresses. Apply applicable industry standards and customer specifications when evaluating equipment interfaces.
· Perform engineering calculations and develop practical design solutions for non-standard or complex piping and mechanical components.
· Apply finite element analysis (FEA) or manual calculation methods, as appropriate, to evaluate the mechanical integrity of non-standard or complex components and piping interfaces.
· Interpret and apply applicable requirements of ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, TEMA, CSA standards, and applicable client/project specifications.
· Ensure engineering designs and calculations comply with applicable codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
· Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including piping stress analysis reports, calculation packages, support loads, equipment nozzle load evaluations, and other engineering documentation.
· Work with the Piping and Drafting teams to incorporate stress analysis requirements into piping layouts, support arrangements, and fabrication drawings.
· Work with Mechanical and Process Engineering to resolve piping and equipment interface issues and develop practical solutions suitable for fabrication.
· Participate in design reviews and provide technical input regarding piping flexibility, supports, equipment loads, and mechanical integrity.
· Review vendor and client documentation to identify piping stress, equipment load, and mechanical design requirements.
· Assist with troubleshooting and resolving fabrication, construction, and field issues related to piping flexibility, supports, equipment connections, and mechanical integrity.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited Canadian institution.
- E.I.T designation or eligibility for registration as an E.I.T with APEGA.
- 0 to 3 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Interest in developing a career in piping stress analysis and mechanical design.
- Previous exposure to CAESAR II, piping design, pressure equipment, or process facilities would be considered an asset.
- Must be Proficient with using Microsoft Office software.
- Must be able to write and communicate in English.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA, or active eligibility for registration, will also be consider. At this time we are only seeking candidate located in the Edmonton area.
Working Conditions
This role is primarily office-based in Edmonton, Alberta, with regular fabrication shop interaction and periodic field travel throughout Alberta for commissioning support, site inspections, and client technical meetings. Shop and field activities require full PPE compliance and adherence to 5Blue’s HSE standards.
Compensation
Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications. Details to be discussed during the selection process.
Pay: $65,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
