The Opportunity
Sundance College is currently seeking to fill the permanent role of Senior Simulation Technologist, responsible for the operational readiness and technical performance of the Practical Nurse Diploma Program's skills laboratories and simulation facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.
This leadership position serves as the program's technical authority for simulation, laboratory, audiovisual, and related computer technology and is accountable for the mentorship, onboarding, and supervision of simulation technical staff. The role supports faculty and learners and requires significant degree of independent judgement in establishing priorities and managing concurrent demands across two campus locations.
Key Responsibilities
Simulation Technology and Equipment
- Install, configure, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and store simulators, task trainers, audiovisual systems, and related equipment.
- Diagnose hardware, software, network, and connectivity issues and provide technical support to faculty, learners, and staff.
- Complete software and firmware updates, preventative maintenance, cleaning, decontamination, calibration, inspections, and function testing.
- Determine equipment serviceability, remove unsafe equipment from service, and maintain equipment, maintenance, and asset records.
- Coordinate technical support, warranty, and service issues with vendors and collaborate with Educational Technology and IT on shared systems and infrastructure.
- Monitor simulation technology developments and recommend equipment replacement, upgrades, and capital acquisitions
Simulation Operations and Supply Management
- Manage equipment and consumable inventory, including stock levels, reorder points, expiry dates, secure storage, and purchasing.
- Prepare purchase requisitions, monitor orders, and resolve supplier discrepancies.
- Coordinate laboratory and simulation spaces, equipment, preparation areas, and storage across courses, cohorts, and campuses.
- Establish daily setup priorities and ensure scheduled sessions are operationally ready.
- Develop and maintain standardized setup templates for laboratories, skill stations, room configurations, and simulation scenarios.
- Maintain standard operating procedures for equipment use, cleaning, storage, and laboratory opening and closing.
Instructional and Learner Support
- Prepare, operate, and reset simulation equipment and laboratory spaces for scheduled sessions.
- Program and operate manikin scenarios and physiological states to faculty specifications and manage audiovisual capture for debriefing.
- Supports faculty and learners in the use of instructional media, EdEHR, and virtual and virtual reality platforms.
- Provides orientation to the simulation environment for learners, faculty, and staff, on simulation technology and develop supporting reference and troubleshooting materials.
- Apply moulage and prepare realistic simulation environments using clinical and simulated supplies, including portraying patients or family members when required.
- Provides technical and feasibility advice during scenario development, including achievable fidelity, device capability, and setup requirements. Scenario design, facilitation, debriefing, and learner evaluation remain the responsibility of nursing faculty.
Leadership and Supervision
- Establishes and maintains operating standards for the laboratory and simulation environment, encompassing equipment readiness, inventory systems, setup templates, and documentation.
- Mentors and onboards simulation technicians and student technical assistants, including orientation to the template library and standard operating procedures.
- Allocate technical staff across campuses based on workload and scheduled simulation activity.
- Plan material and staffing requirements and contribute to operational objectives.
- Identify staff development or performance concerns for Program Leadership.
- Recruit, onboard, mentor, train, schedule, and assign work to simulation technicians and student technical assistants.
Qualifications and Experience
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma in a health discipline or related technical field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum two years of related experience in healthcare, healthcare education, or simulation.
- Working knowledge of simulation modalities, adult education, simulation methodology, healthcare practice, and medical terminology.
- Strong technical aptitude, including software installation, equipment configuration, and independent troubleshooting, with the ability to pursue technical issues to resolution rather than defaulting to vendor support.
- Experience managing inventory and working within established purchasing processes.
- Experience with an electronic health record such as Cerner or MediTech.
- Experience with a learning management system such as Moodle, Canvas, D2L Brightspace, or Blackboard.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel for inventory and maintenance tracking and Word for procedures and reference materials.
- Sound judgment, initiative, communication skills, and ability to independently manage competing priorities across multiple locations.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS/HCP) certification.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel between Calgary and Edmonton. A current driver's abstract will be requested prior to final candidate selection but is not required to apply.
- Ability to obtain and pass a police information check, including a vulnerable sector search.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or recent registration and front-line practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, or Paramedic, with a minimum of two years of clinical experience.
- Experience within a post-secondary or clinical simulation environment.
- Active practice permit with CLHA, CRNA, CARTA, or ACP, where applicable.
- Experience with high-fidelity manikin platforms such as Laerdal, CAE, or Gaumard.
- Familiarity with INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice.
- Moulage experience or willingness and aptitude to develop it.
- Training or certification in audiovisual technology, information technology, adult education, healthcare, or simulation.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification, or the willingness to obtain it within 12 months
- Bachelor’s degree in health or health sciences, particularly clinical leadership or health professional education.
- Clinical leadership experience such as charge nurse, team lead, clinical resource nurse, or unit educator.
- Clinical or post-secondary teaching experience.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or onboarding technical or clinical staff.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification.

Working Conditions
- Ability to independently lift and maneuver up to 23 kg (50 lb) and perform the physical duties associated with moving and maintaining simulation equipment.
- Evening work and travel between Calgary and Edmonton are required. Work may involve exposure to simulated body fluids, latex, adhesives, cleaning agents, sharps, and biological materials under appropriate precautions.
