Who we are

Nova DBA is a specialized database and analytics firm. Our clients trust us with the health, resilience, and evolution of their data environments, and experience us as a single, coherent partner.

The role

We are looking for an experienced solution architect with deep SQL Server expertise to lead our scoped database and data projects from framing through delivery. You lead discovery and planning engagements, produce the specification that carries our guaranteed scope and effort estimate, and design the target architectures our teams execute against. You stay close enough to the technical work to contribute to database administration tasks when an engagement calls for it, and you support our commercial team in pre-sales when a client needs technical credibility to move forward.

This is a database-centred role for someone who enjoys running several projects at once, thinking through architecture with rigour, and staying close enough to the ground that their plans hold up in execution.

What you'll do

Lead discovery and planning engagements: assess environments, map dependencies, run scoping workshops.
Produce the project specification — business needs, current-state assessment, target architecture, phased roadmap, risks and dependencies, effort and timeline estimate — with a scope and effort that Nova DBA stands behind.
Design target architectures for execution: migrations and upgrades, high availability and disaster recovery, consolidations, and analytics foundations (data warehouse, Power BI, Microsoft Fabric).
Bring architectural depth to complex engagements across the portfolio.
Contribute to database administration tasks as the engagement requires: monitoring, maintenance, patching, incident response, preventive maintenance.
Own project coordination: run several engagements in parallel, holding scope, timelines, and effort estimates.
Support pre-sales: join technical scoping calls with the commercial team and surface opportunities identified during delivery.

What you bring

Deep, hands-on SQL Server expertise across administration, performance, high availability, and disaster recovery in production-critical environments.
Strong experience in database and data solution architecture, with working knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) — enough to design well and, when needed, do the work.
Proven project management skills: scoping, estimation, and coordinating multiple engagements at once.
Comfort with pre-sales and client relationships: turning a fuzzy business need into a clear, defensible scope.
Fluent English, spoken and written. Fluent French — this is a client-facing role serving a bilingual Quebec client base, and our deliverables and clients are bilingual.
Autonomy, rigour, and proactive communication.

Nice to have

Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional certification (the senior level is anchored on one of these).
Experience with modern analytics: Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, semantic modelling.
Experience with cloud migrations and HA/DR design.
