Position Summary
The Peri-operative certified RN will possess the theoretical knowledge and technical skills required to work in the peri-operative setting. The Operating Room program is dedicated to providing safe client care utilizing an effective and efficient team approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Meets the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Practical Nurses and practices in accordance with the policies and procedures of Patient Care Services, the RHPA, and other relevant legislation and standards.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skill to organize, coordinate, implement, and participate in the delivery and evaluation of nursing care to meet the needs of each assigned patient.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills to assess changes in patient status, including complexity and stability, and initiates consultation or transfer of care as appropriate.
- Coordinates patient care activities and provides appropriate resources and support to optimize patient outcomes.
- Promotes patient safety and functions in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal and leadership skills to promote collaborative and productive working relationships with all members of the healthcare team.
- Participates as a member of the interprofessional team and promotes effective communication and liaisons between patients, families, physicians, other healthcare team members, and community agencies, including encouraging referrals to appropriate resources.
- Communicates regularly with the OR Team Lead and communicates changes to the OR schedule with the team to support coordinated care and efficient workflow.
- Demonstrates the ability to deal effectively with stress related to changing organizational priorities, personnel matters, and patient care issues.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement within teams and workflows and communicates these to the QEL and Manager.
- Monitors performance data related to patient care and workflow processes and participates in quality improvement, performance improvement, and patient flow activities to optimize outcomes.
- Effectively utilizes human and material resources to support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
- Provides mentorship to staff, participates in the orientation of new team members, and monitors adherence to established protocols and procedures.
- Encourages and models effective conflict resolution among team members.
- Attends educational programs and in-services to enhance knowledge, and participates in the planning and implementation of educational initiatives.
- Maintains professional competence by assessing personal professional development needs and establishing goals and actions to address those needs, while remaining current with developments in nursing practice.
- Works collaboratively with external education facility personnel to facilitate and support student learning experiences.
- Participates in assessing health needs and promotes health education and maintenance through patient and family teaching.
- Assists with hands-on patient care as required and demonstrates competence in scrubbing and maintaining sterile technique.
- Submits work orders to the Facilities Department for equipment maintenance and repair as required.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Program Manager or direct Manager and may be utilized in other patient care areas as needed.
Qualifications
Education
- Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse is required.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support is required. CPR-HCP will also be considered as equivalent.
- Perioperative/Operating Room Nursing Certificate Program is required.
- Current Laser Certificate is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum one (1) year experience in the Operating Room role within the last five (5) years is preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year acute care experience is required.
Skills and Traits
- Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, as outlined in the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).
- Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Provides excellent customer service and contributes positively to teamwork and collaborative working relationships.
