Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (MBQ) is a vibrant First Nation community located on the beautiful shores of the Bay of Quinte. We are located approximately 20 minutes from Belleville, ON and centrally located between Toronto and Ottawa. There are approximately 11,000 registered members with approximately 2200 residing in Tyendinaga. Position Summary:
The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing day-to-day financial operations while ensuring strong technical accounting integrity, disciplined financial management, and the timely delivery of all financial responsibilities.
The Finance Manager position requires a strong understanding of core accounting functions, accounting principles, and the fundamental elements of financial accounting. The Finance Manager must be confident in applying accounting standards, reviewing financial information, and ensuring accuracy and completeness across all financial processes, reconciliations, and reporting activities. A critical responsibility of this role is contributing to the organization’s audit package, which is a complex and high-priority deliverable of the Finance Department. The Finance Manager is expected to ensure all financial records, schedules, and supporting documentation are accurate, complete, and well organized throughout the year. This role also plays a key part in internal audit activities, compliance monitoring, and financial policy implementation across the organization.
The Finance Manager ensures financial policies and procedures are consistently understood, properly applied, and effectively followed across all departments. This is an in-office role requiring consistent physical presence to support team supervision, operational oversight, collaboration, and timely decision making. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong accountability, reliability, and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. Working within a First Nation organizational environment, the Finance Manager contributes to financial stewardship, transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of
resources in support of community priorities.
Reporting:
This position will report to the Director of Finance. This position oversees the Finance Team.
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
Financial Operations Management:
o Oversee daily operations of the Finance team
Policy
o Following and ensuring the finance team are following MBQ Policies
People, Leadership and Development:
o Demonstrating positive leadership and providing direct supervision and accountability for the team
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
o Assisting in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports, reconciling and analysing results, and assisting dept managers prepare budgets and reports for TMC
Budgeting & Forecasting:
o Supporting the annual budgeting process, assist with program budgets and monitor expenditures
Subledger Oversight
o Overseeing Payroll, AP, and AR, processing to ensure accuracy and timeliness
Organizational and Community Support
o Working collaboratively with managers, departments and leadership to support financial planning and decision making
System Process Improvement and Administration
o Assisting in maintaining and improving accounting systems, finance workflows, and financial reporting
Internal Controls and Compliance
o Maintaining and strengthening internal controls to protect MBQ’s financial assets and ensure sound financial practices
Audit and Year End Support
o Coordinating and preparing documentation required for internal and external audits
Health and Safety:
o Promoting and following all MBQ Health and Safety policies and procedures
All other duties as required
Requirements:
- Post-Secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration, commerce or related field
- (degree preferred)
- Professional accounting designation (CPA, CAFM, etc.) is desire
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience working in accounting/finance
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory or management position
- Experience in a First Nations setting is an asset
- Combination of training, education and experience may be considered (at the discretion of the organization)
- Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (documentation will be required if successful applicant)
- First Aid and CPR an asset (and must be willing to take the training if hired)
- Valid Driver’s License and vehicle
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced Considerable knowledge of Federal and Provincial government structures, and First Nations government processes and structures
- Knowledge and ability to implement quality improvement initiative and measure outcomes
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation’s needs, issues, concerns, and aspirations.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of administration, business planning and financial management
- Knowledge of TMT and Mohawk history, culture and language would be an asset
- Strong communication, interpersonal skills and customer focus
- Advanced computer skills as required by position, with an expertise in Excel and Sage 300
- Strong leadership, coaching, facilitation, conflict, and resolution and relationship management skills
- Exceptional time and project management skills with proven organizational and multi-tasking proficiency
- Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, and ability to use sound judgment
- Adept at identifying best practices, and creating systems and processes
- Demonstrated record of success in working in a financial field, preparing audits, financial management, resource procurement
- Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines
- Demonstrate commitment to collaborative and consultative leadership and the ability to work effectively within a management team and fast – paced environment.
- Ability to follow established policies and practices to ensure fiscally responsible management
- Ability to professionally and respectfully work with Tyendinaga Mohawk Council, staff, members of the public and other key collaborative contacts
- Ability to direct research initiatives, analyze the data and develop conclusions and solutions
- Ability to work with limited resources and to maximize available resources to achieve objectives
- Ability to synthesize information, brief elected officials and provide options for decision making
- Ability to identify with the emotional state of others to builds connection, creates safety, and enables trust
- Ability to assess risk and determine appropriate action
- Ability to work unusual and unanticipated hours to provide advice, services, etc.
