We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Mechanical Designer / Estimator to join our growing team in a large custom manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for creating detailed mechanical designs, supporting estimating activities, maintaining engineering documentation, and collaborating closely with manufacturing teams to ensure projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and to quality standards.
The ideal candidate brings strong 3D modeling experience, a practical understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, production, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor
- Interpret customer requirements, specifications, and design concepts to develop practical manufacturing solutions
- Prepare estimates, material take-offs, and costing support for custom manufacturing projects
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support ERP processes; experience with Visual ERP is considered an asset
- Create, maintain, and implement engineering changes and drawing revisions
- Produce and maintain quality control documentation, manufacturing documentation, and work instructions
- Collaborate with manufacturing and shop floor teams to troubleshoot design, fabrication, and production issues
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering documentation, workflows, and manufacturing processes
- Ensure designs and documentation comply with Quality Management and Health & Safety systems
- Communicate effectively with internal departments including production, purchasing, quality, and project management
- Assist with prototype development, product improvements, and custom project execution
- Maintain accurate engineering files, records, and revision controls
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or custom fabrication environment
- Proficient with Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling and detailed manufacturing drawings
- Strong understanding of fabrication, machining, welding, and manufacturing processes
- Experience preparing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and supporting ERP systems; Visual ERP experience is an asset
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and blueprints
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in a production environment
- Knowledge of engineering change management and revision control processes
- Familiarity with quality standards, manufacturing documentation, and Health & Safety requirements
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard engineering documentation tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in custom manufacturing, industrial equipment, or heavy fabrication environments
- Exposure to estimating, costing, or project coordination functions
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous improvement practices
- Familiarity with ISO quality systems
