We are looking for a strategic and creative communicator to join our team as a Manager, Communications & Engagement. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for storytelling, collaboration and building meaningful connections across an organization and with its communities. Reporting to the VP, Brand, Communications & Engagement, the Manager leads the development and delivery of strategic communications that support JIBC's goals and strengthen its reputation. The role oversees internal communications and the Institute's intranet strategy to ensure employees are informed, engaged and connected, while also contributing to enhancing JIBC's external profile through proactive media, government and community engagement.
In this role, you will develop and implement clear, engaging and inclusive communications that reflect JIBC's values and advance institutional priorities. You will lead a small, talented team to deliver compelling content, strengthen employee engagement and ensure consistent messaging across all channels. The position also supports media relations and issues management, and prepares key messages and advocacy materials and supports executive communications. As a leader, you will foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture, provide guidance and mentorship and champion JIBC's commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization.
This role is ideal for an experienced communications leader who thrives in a dynamic environment and enjoys leading a team to deliver strategic communications that strengthen engagement, build trust and enhance organizational reputation. The successful candidate will bring exceptional judgement, a strong understanding of strategic communications, and the ability to coach and oversee the development of clear, compelling messages across a range of channels and audiences.
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- Professional qualifications from the International Association of Business Communications, the Canadian Public Relations Society or a similar professional organization is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public affairs, corporate communications, or public relations, preferably in post-secondary, public sector, or similarly complex organization.
- Minimum of two years' experience leading, supervising, or mentoring communications professionals, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading internal communications initiatives, including communications supporting organizational change and institutional priorities within a unionized labour management environment.
- Experience supporting executive communications, public affairs, government relations, or stakeholder engagement initiatives.
- Demonstrated expertise in strategic communications planning, with the ability to develop and implement integrated communications strategies that support organizational priorities, employee engagement, and institutional reputation.
- Strong understanding of internal communications, employee engagement, editorial planning, and audience-focused communications.
- Demonstrated ability to administer intranet or enterprise content management systems (e.g., ThoughtFarmer, SharePoint, or similar platforms), including content governance and user
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic messaging, executive communications, and communications materials that advance institutional priorities.
- Knowledge of media relations, with experience identifying and pursuing earned media opportunities and supporting the management of sensitive or high-profile issues.
- Advanced knowledge of digital communications strategy, including content planning, social media strategy, analytics, and the development of visual and video storytelling.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee events and engagement initiatives, including planning, coordination, communications, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Advanced strategic writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to motivate and engage teams, while driving performance outcomes.
- Strong organizational, project management, and planning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to evolving organizational needs.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

Fair Comparison/Excluded/Faculty Equivalent: We offer a total compensation package that includes a benefit plan, which includes Extended Health and Dental Benefits after three months, and enrollment in the College Pension Plan upon hire. In addition, we offer 20 vacation days and 10 Personal Days annually (pro-rated in first year), as well as generous other leave entitlements.
$99,567 to $ 117,138 annually – Fair Comparison Faculty Equivalent Compensation Salary Grid 10
The Compensation Range shown reflects JIBC's range for the role: between 85% and 100% of the sector range control point. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between 85% - 94% of the control point, based on the knowledge, qualifications and experience for the role, with exceptions in the 95% - 100% range. (Remove for Faculty Equivalent keep for Excluded)
